Getting excited for the Exotic and urban psittacines! #parrots #IOCongress2018
Pruett-Jones: talking about parrots in the continental US. 3 native species - Carolina Parakeet (extinct), Thick-billed parrot (extinct in the wild), Red-crowned parrot (northern range reaches into Texas). #IOCongress2018
Pruett-Jones: 3191867 individuals of 271 parrot species have been imported into the US. That’s 70% of all parrot sp! Over 80 sp have been seen in the wild at least once, and 29 sp are regularly reported. Florida is a parrot hotspot with ~70 sp seen there. #IOCongress2018
Pruett-Jones: number of imports does not correlate to number of sightings though. ie African Greys are very popular (>200000 imports), but they are rarely seen in the wild in the US.
Importation centres have high likelihood of escapees and sightings. #IOCongress2018
Pruett-Jones: parrot hotspots in the US. Florida is a major hotspot. #IOCongress2018
Pruett-Jones: Budgies once occurred in high numbers in the US, but is now nearly extinct. This is due to displacement by house sparrows, which compete for nesting spaces. #IOCongress2018
Pruett-Jones: monk parakeets highly successful in the US. They are a nuisance species as they cause major infrastructure damage with their huge communal nests. They are a popular species though and people will travel to see them. #IOCongress2018
@cityparrots: parrot conservation in urban areas. #IOCongress2018
@cityparrots: Indian ringnecks have been in the Netherlands for 50yrs. There are now >12000 individuals. They are banded, tagged, and measured in order to study their longevity, dispersal, and health. #IOCongress2018
@cityparrots: not as bitey as a real parrot! I love a good photoshop job! #IOCongress2018
@cityparrots: there are 114 parrot sp in urban areas within their native range/countries worldwide. Including my study species and many Australian species! #IOCongress2018
@cityparrots: most urban parrots are from introductions, even in their native ranges. 80% of urban parrots are Indian ringnecks and monk parakeets. #IOCongress2018
Braun: there used to be a wild population of Carolina Parakeets in Europe! Unfortunately they were all shot by one person in the space of 2 days. #IOCongress2018
Braun: invasive ringnecks in Europe breed in the winter. They also utilise a lot of anthropogenic structures for nesting. #IOCongress2018
Braun: 69% of adult ringnecks in Germany suffer from frostbite to their toes. This results in missing toes and claws, which reduces mobility. #IOCongress2018
Braun: 38% of eggs in Germany do not hatch, likely due to extreme cold when insulating nesting materials (ie styrofoam) are depleted. #IOCongress2018
Braun: European Indian ringnecks are undergoing rapid morphological changes to adapt to their new environment. Evolution in action! #IOCongress2018
@AA_Andersson: now for the Yellow-crested cockatoo with Astrid!
@AA_Andersson: yellow-created cockatoo has an established pop of 150 inds in Hong Kong. They’re found in the most built-up areas of the city. @IOCongress2018
@AA_Andersson: tiny declining pop of yellow-creates cockatoos in Singapore as well. #IOCongress2018
@AA_Andersson: largest natural pop of yellow-created cockatoo is on Komodo Island. #IOCongress2018
@AA_Andersson: investigated habitat availability in native habitat on Komodo and Hong Kong. In Hong Kong 77.5% of tree species used by yellow-created cockatoos were non-native! #IOCongress2018
@AA_Andersson: yellow-created cockatoo competes for nest hollows with Goffin’s Cockatoo and Oriental Pied Hornbill. Both of these species are more aggressive than the YC cockatoo. #IOCongress2018
@AA_Andersson: YC cockatoo native pop (Komodo) generally stable since 1980 and illegal poaching is minimal. Large numbers for sale in markets in Hong Kong though. Maybe home breeders or poaching from the urban Hong Kong pop. #IOCongress2018
@AA_Andersson: used stable isotope analysis of feathers to determine whether market birds came from captive birds or wild pop. This method shows the diet of the bird. Can tell if captive or wild due to different diets of captive vs wild cockatoos. #IOCongress2018
Durham: southern Californian parrots as conservation opportunities for endangered Mexican species. #IOCongress2018
Durham: “eco xenophobia”, the thought that native = good and non-native = bad. This often appears when talking about naturalised species. #IOCongress2018
Durham: past options for parrots that appeared in wildlife rehab - become a pet, or be euthanised. Even for CITES listed species. #IOCongress2018
Durham: 13 parrot sp in Southern California. 3 endangered and 1 near threatened. #IOCongress2018
Durham: slow process to get permission to rescue, rehab, and release urban parrots back into the wild. Finally approved and the urban parrots were classed as “non-invasive” due to habitat requirements. #IOCongress2018
Durham: all parrots tested for psittacosis and other parrot diseases prior to release. No positive tests for psittacosis since testing began in 2012. #IOCongress2018
Durham: all parrots microchipped and measured etc to collect data. Dead parrots sent to Moore Lab @OxyMLZ to join their collection and be included in genetic studies. #IOCongress2018
Durham: red-crowned and lilac-crowned Amazons are probably hybridising in Southern California. Probable higher numbers of both species in SoCal than in their native ranges. #IOCongress2018
Durham: SoCal red-crowned Amazons may be a genetic reservoir. Helpful for situations that may arise with hurricanes decimating other pops.
#IOCongress2018
Durham: upcoming papers on San Diego roostncounts ans genetic analysis from @OxyMLZ. Can’t wait! #IOCongress2018
Durham: ways to keep up to date with the project on social media. @SoCalParrot @crazybirdgirl (if I’d had these at the beginning I would have used them in the previous tweets. Sorry!) #IOCongress2018
