THIS.... is absolutely hilarious.

As @JackPosobiec points out, it was an INTERNAL security test. "Michael Kan, a reporter for PCMag, determined that the unauthorized third party was the Michigan Democratic Party — technically a separate entity from the national group."
The talking points the Dems are trying to run out are it was an unauthorized third party.

Nope.

It was a state branch of the Democrats doing a cybersecurity audit of the national party. This is actually what's SUPPOSED to happen during audits.
Within an organization, one group tries to catch another by surprise with a security breach to test defenses and procedures. For example: in large accounting departments of companies, they'll test their security procedures by having a clerk attempt to, say, write a bogus check.
If someone along the way catches that the check/the invoice its paying it bullshit, the security audit is passed! If that clerk, who happens to be responsible for mailing off the checks, gets it back signed and ready to be mailed of... >.>
So what happened here with the Democrats?

Well, given how much of a stink the DNC raised over cybersecurity, a state level group said, 'We need to do a cybersecurity audit before the midterms in case something like that happens again.' Smart and logical. I actually approve.
The DNC then caught the security attack, which was in the form of phishing sites. Well, more they had contractors who caught the security attack. Again, good for them. Good for the DNC actually beefing up their cybersecurity.
What went wrong?

The DNC, still caught in the heat of 'Muh Russia', saw 'hack' and flipped the fuck out, believing they were in the midst of being hacked again, with PTSD flashbacks of 2016 happening all over again, and started claiming they were under attack again!
Exceeeeeept.... it was their own people, trying to make sure that WOULDN'T happen again.

So, in what should be a SHINING MOMENT OF PRIDE, where the DNC said, 'What happened in 2016? Won't happen again, we're passing our internal cybersecurity audits!', instead they look DUUUUMB
This shows a couple key things that are actually REALLY IMPORTANT. Yes. REALLY IMPORTANT.
First: The DNC is still paranoid as hell. Paranoia leads to kneejerk reactions and idiot mistakes. And the best part? This paranoia and fear? THEY'RE DOING IT TO THEMSELVES.
Second: The DNC is apparently still having major communication issues with the state-level party.

This is HUGE. This miscommunication between the state parties and the DNC were one of the major reasons they LOST in 2016.
That it is the MICHIGAN state party that's having these communication issues with the DNC is even BETTER. That is one of the key battleground states, given Trump's impact Michigan is essentially a purple state.
PLUS, Michigan is one of the Senate seats we could flip. If @JohnJamesMI can take advantage of the apparent LACK of communication between the Michigan Democrats and the DNC, that could be key in beating Stabmeintheeyesnow
So, overall... this incident is hilarious, embarrassing for the DNC, AND a great portent of things to come.
