People who think the answer to this unacceptable state of affairs is more guns have something fundamentally wrong with them.
We shouldn’t listen for another moment to people who think guns are a right.
We’re letting our children leave high school with PTSD so that John McAfee can feel safe by keeping a glock in one hand whenever he poops, makes sense if you think about it, sensible belief system.

The President of the United States has spent his entire public life, which is now in its 5th decade, habitually and repeatedly making provably untrue statements.

That fact is so important that it should accompany any mention of him in news media.
Yes, all or at least most other politicians have lied. I don't think we've ever had a president whose entire public life has been defined not just by specific lies, but by lying.

Lying as strategy.

Lying as lifestyle.

Lying for the sake of lying.

It's relevant.
There should be no mention of his name without the accompanying context.

"Donald Trump (who has told proveable untruths his entire life, and repeats them after they're proved false), addressed the nation today."

Absent the parenthetical, the whole story isn't told.

So in light of the Jake Paul thing, I want to make a thread on psychopaths. Just a general discussion one.

(**I know that the Jake Paul question was about SOCIOPATHS and that there's a difference between that and psychopaths, but you get the idea I'm going for.)
Before I begin let me take the time to clarify that difference.
Roughly speaking:
- Sociopath: more of a brute in antisocial behavior. more blunt. Uncaring.
- Psychopath: cold and calculated manipulator that knows how to pull the strings of human nature.

A good analogy to make (thanks for pointing this out @JPMahoney1) is the difference between Lex Luthor and Joker.

The former being disconnected from human nature in their seize for power. The latter being a king of mind games who takes advantage of human nature to get power.

Meg: Different people have different strengths. People say: “We should all care about ethics”. Geek out about what you love. Apply yourself to what you. Lots of other things that come to bear besides just working with data, e.g. sociology, psychology, maths, etc.
Important to focus on what you really love. Work with people that have complimentary and different interests.
Yoav: Personally don’t work on huge data. If some company would like to train a huge LM on the entire web, that’d be great to have and analyze.

Mass public shootings are not representative of our broader gun violence problem. They account for about 1% of all gun deaths annually. So even if we could come up with policies that completely eliminated mass shootings, 99% of gun deaths would still take place.

When most people hear the term "mass shooting," they automatically think of mass public shootings (school shootings, etc). But most mass shootings don't take place in public; we just don't usually hear about the ones behind closed doors, so we also don't talk about them.

1) I don't have a ton of followers, so I hope this thread gets RTed by someone who does, BECAUSE I AM PISSED!

The bullied are becoming the school shooters. Know why? Because no one stopped those who bullied them! It is a sad truth that kids cannot defend themselves.
2) Kids are taught and told not to defend themselves! If they retaliate, they are punished, just like the bullies! That's exactly what #NoTolerance IS! It means that teachers and adminstration don't need to use discernment, in any situation. Everyone is punished, no matter what.
3) There is something fundamentally wrong with punishing the victim for defending themselves. Also, when punishing both the bully and the victim, the bully usually isn't afraid of consequence. THAT'S WHY THEY'RE A BULLY. It also sends the message that defending yourself is wrong.

I've been thinking a lot about falls from grace, embarrassment, being called out/taking criticism, and social rituals and have some thoughts that have finally coalesced.
Bear with me (or mute the thread if you don't want it clogging up your feed, because it's going to be long and we're doing detours through a bit of neuroscience, sociology, Leviticus, and Depeche Mode).
So there are two conversations that I've been hearing a lot, generally offline, in my circles. 1) why don't people just APOLOGIZE when they screw up? and 2) we've got to find healthier ways to deal with people screwing up.

So @NPR @nprpolitics, I have some feelings about this I'd like to pass along...
Though, given the fact that you've allowed this reprehensible "exercise" to go on for days now, I doubt you'll care. But this is Twitter, so, hey, I don't really expect anyone to be listening.
For most of my adult life, @NPR has been my main news source. That's a time period that stretches 30+ years. And I've been proud of that fact.
