Feeling quite emotional for the last ever edition of This Week. Andrew Neil calls it the late night graveyard of penetrating political analysis and charts its history. My thread 👇#ThisWeek #BBCtw
He notes all the times he and his regular guests failed to read the political runes correctly, before quipping “and some of you wonder why we’re being taken off the air!” #bbctw
Biggest cheer so far for Molly the Dog 👌#bbctw #thisweek

@JamesDelingpole Two issues with your piece.
N°1: you assert, "Britain traded perfectly well for the large chunk of history it has spent outside the EU." This is a spurious argument. The EU didn't exist then. We are going from the best possible trade terms with the EU (SM+CU) to worst (#WTO).
@JamesDelingpole This will not just impact our trade with EU27 + EEA/EFTA4, but also with those countries with trade with via EU FTAs and those countries we trade with on WTO+++ terms, the '+++' furnished by the EU's 759 facilities that improve on #WTO terms.
@JamesDelingpole Only 16% of UK's trade is on WTO terms alone.

You're proposing that we dramatically downgrade 100% of our trade to WTO terms alone, at the stroke of a pen. This is insanity. It has taken decades to reach to position we're in today. No wonder Mogg says 50yrs to recover!

This guy (James Delingpole) arguing that India, China and America trade with the EU on WTO terms, so we can do that too.
Which of those countries trade on WTO terms with their closest geographic neighbours?
.@SamGyimah: "We can't ignore the market of 500 million people on our doorstep!"

"You can't handle the truth!" - Jack Nicholson.

Prove Jack wrong by facing the truth about Brexit. (Each tweet below is the start of an individual, detailed thread on a specific aspect of Brexit.)

The truth about Brexit, the "no deal" scenario, the EU "punishment" narrative, and the reality of trading on WTO terms.
Brexit changes everything. You can forget ending austerity, funding the NHS, reversing cuts to the police force, achieving anything, if you don't first solve Brexit. There is only ONE challenge over the next few months: Brexit! (An "open letter" to MPs)

A DUP MP said last night on #BBCtw that Scotland’s largest export market is the United Kingdom, so it would be stupid to turn our backs on it by going independent. This has to be one of the most misleading and ridiculous arguments I’ve ever heard against independence.
Firstly, the actual amount of Scottish exports to the rest of the UK is unknown because the treasury doesn’t produce data for internal trade. It’s deemed impracticable. There’s also no legal requirement for companies to produce financial data at a UK constituent country-level.
Since no official hard data exists, the Scottish Government commissions an annual survey (GCS) to collect data on company exports outside Scotland. Larger well-known businesses have a greater chance of being sampled.

The truth about Brexit, the "EU is punishing us" narrative & what "no deal" actually means... (1/19)

The EU isn't punishing the UK for Brexit. We are punishing ourselves. Losing all the benefits of EU membership IS punishment. Just like no longer being able to use the fitness equipment or the weights is punishment for quitting the local gym. 2/19
You might well put on weight because you cancelled your gym membership. But you wouldn't turn around and say "Hey, the gym's punishing me for leaving by making me fat!" That's the consequence of losing your gym membership, not the fault of the gym. 3/19

Something is happening out there in #Brexit Britain [thread] 1/
Following all the ballyhoo from the #chequers cabinet & resultant white paper, something has changed. Finally the penny is beginning to drop. What is my evidence? Well of course its anecdotal but here are a few bits 2/
Watching #bbcqt last night from Brexity Dartford, there seemed to be a clear change of mood. There were the usual calls of "just leave" but the audience response was muted. @claireperrymp gave an admission - a 1st for Govt Minister of how difficult the process of leaving is. 3/
