Our Europe editor @pmdfoster wrote a piece tackling 10 crucial questions about Brexit. Some furious Brexiteers, who felt they knew far more about Brexit than Peter, demanded to write a rebuttal. Hilariously, their article doesn't answer the 10 questions...
telegraph.co.uk/politics/2018/…
e.g Question 1: How much clout does a nation of 65 million people have in global trade?
They respond "This question is immaterial"
Question 2: Will the British government ask for the ability to extend the transition period?
They respond: Why would we need to extend it?
Question 3: Do we really want a trade deal with the United States?
They respond: Why wouldn't we want a deal?
They are much clearer on Q4, whether we should stay in a customs union (no) but as for Q5 - "Does a customs border in the Irish Sea really risk the break-up of the UK?" - they respond: "this question is an irrelevance"
Q6, they are clear. "Very high" appetite for "buccaneering." Fair play. But on Q7 - What economic price is worth paying to end free movement? - they do not say, just assert that Britain will be better off. (Obviously, there is always a price for a seismic change in trade policy)
I seem to have fumbled the ordering the questions which rather takes the wind out of my sails! But on remaining questions they are clearer - no vassalage, no EU defence, no 2nd referendum. Fair play.
Here's Peter Foster's original piece. I think it was a great idea to publish the Brexiteers' piece BTW as it lets readers decide who is better informed. Telegraph doing a lot more on reader engagement these days.
