It’s Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah) tonight, Monday and Tuesday. I’ll be off twitter, a blessing!

I’m an atheist but I do believe in the power of communities and moral systems to help people live better lives.

I have a couple of resolutions...
The first is to try and say what’s true. And try to avoid saying what I think just supports my ‘team’ or will generate likes and adulation. We all do it and I certainly do it. I’m going to try and do it less.
The second is to listen more. I know the last few weeks and months have been intense and at times very difficult, but I have hugely appreciated the hundreds - perhaps thousands - of respectful and enriching *genuine* conversations I have had with people who disagree with me.
I believe there is a marketplace for ideas and by trying to say what’s true and truly listening we can all be better people with a richer view of the world.

In the final para here @NickCohen4 suggests that under a Corbyn Labour government the Human Rights Act would be threatened as it places checks on governments... not sure about that! Certainly no signs of it in anything any Labour politician has said
I do get the point and also worry about some of the anti-dissent tendencies around Corbyn's movement. But whether a Corbyn government would go as far as unravelling the HRA which he and his colleagues have clearly supported, I doubt.

1) So I went to a different synagogue today and heard from one of the great #Jewish thinkers, leaders, scholars, good souls of our time, Rabbi Joseph Telushkin.

It is hard to overstate his influence but let's just say this was once in a lifetime.

2) Rabbi Telushkin was the scholar-in-residence at Congregation Beth Sholom in Potomac, Maryland. That means he gave multiple talks, Friday night, during services, after services, and again just before Havdalah (ritual ending the Sabbath).

I got to hear two of the talks.
3) Why should you care about this when there are more important things happening in the world?

I would argue that we spend a lot of time talking about the bad actors that have invaded our culture. We should talk about the good ones, more.

So we just spent Jewish new year as we always do - friends, family, eating, honey cake, synagogue...

And it’s all been the same as normal as it has been for the last 40 years that I can remember until last night...
Last night the conversation moved on from schools, and TV, and work to the subject on every Jew’s mind at the moment: Corbyn.

And we sat for hours planning with our friends where and how we would leave if he became Prime Minister. We swapped potential passport options.
We argued on the merits of other “safer” countries. We discussed when, why, how and where we would make a new start.

Do people realise this is happening in the UK in 2018?

Thread. So, Rosh Hashanah. Jewish new year. Starts tonight (Jewish days start at night because Genesis says “it was evening, then it was morning”). Lasts 2 days, during which some Jews, described as “orthodox” (a term I dislike) will be off air. Including me.
RH literally means
“Head of the Year”. It’s supposed to mark the start of creation. Not the magic story, but the fact that the creation narrative marks the point at which humans began to regard themselves historically. Unlike animals we need to know where we come from. The Jewish creation story
begins with an acknowledgement that creation itself is not human and comes from nothing.
The religious response to that is to recognise our place in the scheme of things. That leads, in turn, to wondering about our relationship with the force of creation.
We call it God.
