So, yesterday's Brexiteers want to be able to diverge away from the rules of the Single Market (or the 'common rulebook' as Chequers calls it) because that's stifling UK economic growth and the UK must be allowed to put sawdust in sausages. ➡️
But today, the risks/effects of products that are not SM-compliant crossing over the border into the Republic and (and subsequently the remaining members of the EU-27 and the EEA) are minimal and there doesn't need to be a hard customs border in between NI and the Republic. ➡️
Yesterday's Brexiteers believe the WTO is the right option, but today's Brexiteers (who, somewhat bizarrely, are the same people) believe that the EU should eschew the rules of the WTO and wait for some non-existent technology to manifest itself. ➡️
Can anybody reconcile these various conflicting points of view, separated as they are by a mere 24 hours? ⏹️

So, in Johnson's view and in the eyes of May, and the remainder of her cabinet - the December declaration was nothing more than an artificial confection agreed to for the benefit of moving to the political declaration part of A50 regarding the future relationship. ➡️
Or, and this always has to be a consideration with Johnson, he's lying his considerable ass off and he knew exactly what the December Joint Report was and is only changing his position now for his traditional reasons of his own personal advancement in the Conservative Party. ➡️
Neither is a particularly edifying prospect: Either the UK's current head of government is a sociopathic liar or everybody else in the upper echelons of the current ruling party that aspires to the job is a sociopathic liar. ⏹️

Where's the punishment?

• UK government choses to remove itself from EU SM and CU.
• UK gov chooses to minimise/denigrate importance of EU SM and CU in UK trade
• A bemused EU allows the UK to test its assumptions against reality

The Leavers have spent the last 30+ months saying that the EU's Single Market, Customs Union and Common Commercial Policy effectively hold back British competitiveness and innovation.➡️
So the EU are saying "Off you trot, put your money where your mouth is; but - just so you're aware - please don't expect us to act as your safety net or to allow you to compromise the standards that we have established. Out of the EU means out of the SM". ➡️

2/ Some of the arguments made in favour of Brexit are the UK’s ability to negotiate its own trade deals, most growth will come from outside the EU, the EU is “protectionist” and slow at negotiating trade deals.
3/ As we rapidly approach 29 March 2019 where the UK will have no trade deals to its name & is asking the EU to include the UK in its FTAs (& stay in the single market & customs union in all but name but with no influence) during the transition, the UK is not in a great position

Some quick thoughts on #chequers outcome...
1. There is more realism in it than we’ve seen before from UK government (though that’s not saying much!) - so, to that extent, hopefully a step forward. However...
2...still massive unresolved questions about acceptability to EU (it still reads like cherry picking and an attempt to divide four freedoms), deliverability (given the sheer complexities), and desirability (especially around impact on services - a real and profound concern)...
3. But perhaps key point is this - if this becomes the UK starting point in negotiations, it is surely game on for those who would prefer to see a full single market/customs union outcome.

So @MichelBarnier
may have appeared to pull his punches today, but don't be fooled. He stuck firmly to EU guns.

This is a key word "de-dramatise" and you'll hear it a lot more - and it is not good news for Mrs May. Here's why /1
If EU sticks to guns on cherry-picking, then that leaves UK with basic FTA...and that means an Irish sea goods border.

When Barnier says "de-dramatise" he means May and Davis need to give over on their contention that such a border is a threat to UK constitutional integrity /2
So when Barnier uses this word, it's code for "the only compromise we need here is by the UK" on the question of the east-west border that would be thrown up by hiving of Northern Ireland into separate regulatory orbit. Something May has said is "unacceptable". /3
