i like how the standard process of 'lets install linux on a machine and see what it's like now' ends with 'well, the catastrophic problems i'm having are caused by this distro being the Bad One this year and the only solution is to switch to another'
fedora currently runs wayland so no gui app works on it. Everything I've attempted to install pisses out a stack trace or shows a black window. Google confirms these apps don't work on Wayland.
Every time I install linux with a gui, it doesn't work in a new way and I'm told "oh that distro's terrible" but every year it's a new one. Every time I look at this, all the distros have stood up, marched around, and sat down in new chairs, and six of them get the "Bad" chairs
And of course they're all bad, but the ones in the Bad chairs can't do certain things like "run programs" or "make sound" and the others are just unchanged from 1998 as usual
It always goes like this for me:
1) install OS
2) get 3, 4 things working
3) two hours of shit refusing to work and none of the info i can find online works as it says it will
4) the next day I complain and am told "oh debian is unusable" (last year it was recommended)
5) i do not proceed because i already spent a day configuring the system and it's *already* too much work to repeat.
6) I do something productive and put another black mark on the "Linux Is Worthless Shit" calendar for this year
d'ya know why I don't like linux? it's simple: it doesn't respect me. It has no respect for my time. Nobody working on it cares that if I spend two or eight hours setting it up, I deserve to have it continue working, not jump ship and reinstall from scratch.
I legitimately believe that distributions are the problem. As long as there are multiple distros, everyone can continue doing what they do now: Never fix anything, just say the solution to every problem is to jump ship and reinstall from scratch.
If there was a single, atomic OS called "linux" then it would be someone's fault that linux isn't working for you. Instead it's your fault because you picked the wrong distro.
The response to every complaint is that it's *your* fault, the user, for not knowing what pile of shit is ""working"" this year
Btw, none of this matters to me. I consider Linux an insult to the human race, so I install it, use it in good faith until it shits the bed for no reason, and then dunk on it. It doesn't affect me, except insofar as I believe I deserve a reasonable alternative to Windows.
