A note in light of Flake’s statement: Kavanaugh nomination can still go to the floor without a majority vote to support him in committee.

Then-Chairman Joe Biden voted no on Clarence Thomas in committee, but nomination still went to floor with committee evenly split 7-7
The committee vote isn’t like a primary, where you have to win the vote to move on. It’s a motion to send it to the floor with a favorable recommendation. Nominees have advanced with negative recommendations
And another thing: this would be a very different conversation if McConnell didn’t extend filibuster rule change to SCOTUS nominations for Gorsuch.
