(1) Officer Ronil Singh was a Fijian-Indian who migrated legally to the US & become a police officer. There has been a brain drain of Fijian-Indians over the past 30 years bc of racism & repeated coups. Many came to NZ... they are welcomed here, usually pillars of the community.
(2) The most recent coup in Fiji was in 2006. Naval Commodore Frank Bainimarama overthrow the lawfully elected govt at the barrel of a gun. Despite murder and repression, the international community "forgot" all about it & even gave him a UN role. Of course.

Source: an ABC reporter at the Pentagon. Hopefully this is the real letter.

Assuming it is, here are my thoughts on it:
(2) I love, love, love General James Mattis and always have, from the moment I first learned who he is. That will never change.

I have two possible explanations for why he chose to mention "respect for allies" & being harder on adversaries in this letter.
(3) Two MAIN possible explanations. Sure, there will be others.

It could be 4D chess kabuki theater, he's certainly capable of it.

Or, it could be his genuine feelings and desire to distance himself from some of Trump's actions. Sad.

North Carolina shelter list for evacuees.
Weather geek twitter is great fun, and who knows what the actual track will be with all this model uncertainty, but the strength is assured and the coastal areas are looking to take a brutal wind+flood beating. I hope everyone who needs to evacuate has evacuated—or is about to.

Hurricane #Florence continues on track for a history-making landfall in North Carolina -- with potential simultaneous new all-time East Coast records for wind, rainfall, and storm surge.

A word on each of those three main threats:

The main threat to life from Hurricane #Florence is storm surge—the reason for the mandatory coastal evacuations.

Historically, storm surge accounts for half of all hurricane deaths.

#Florence could bring 10-20 feet of storm surge, among the highest ever on the East Coast.

The current East Coast storm surge record is 18ft, set by Hazel (1954) and Hugo (1989) -- both hit the Carolinas.

Dire predictions with Hurricane #Florence look increasingly likely for the Carolinas/Virginia. Several points need to be made as Monday dawns.
1) This will be a LARGE storm. HWRF model Simulated IR satellite is an esitmate, but shows a storm as large as North Carolina.
2) @NHC_Atlantic official forecast is 150 mph winds (near Category 5) offshore. #Florence will likely be Category 4 near landfall with 140 mph winds. Landfall zone may still shift, but most models show a devastating wind field near Wilmington/Topsail/Jacksonville, NC Thursday.
3) Historical comparisons w/ Hugo (wind/surge damage) & Harvey (flood damage) look more likely with each new model run. #Florence will likely stall inland or on NC coast for 3-4 days. 20" to 30"+ rainfall totals look likely. This would produce devastating floods.

OK you guys, my intention is not to scare anyone with this message.

But Hurricane #Florence—the storm bound for North Carolina—is going to be about the size of North Carolina when it arrives.

This is what it will look like, according to the latest high-res model prediction:
And it will likely arrive as a Category 4 -- and potentially become the strongest East Coast hurricane landfall in recorded history, with sustained winds of >140mph.

Here's what that will do:
"Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks or months."

*After* that, the latest weather models predict #Florence will stall out for four days -- similar to what happened to Hurricane Harvey last year in Texas.

Much of North Carolina & Virginia could be dealing with their worst flood in history.
