Freeland is back for NAFTA. Says she’s been in close contact with Lighthizer since their last meeting. Says Canadian and US negotiators worked through the night until 7 am. She ends by thanking journalists, saying they are helping democracy.
Freeland has exited her first meeting of the day with Lighthizer. She is going to meet with Ontario Premier Doug Ford, then back for more negotiations later.
Freeland, more talkative today than she usually has been after these meetings, thanks the Canadians who she says have sent nice messages, flowers and chocolate to her office to express NAFTA support.
Asked about Bob Woodward’s Trump book and whether it helps her understand who she’s dealing with, Freeland says she has great respect for Bob Woodward and is “embarrassed” to say she has been reading briefing books instead of his.
Freeland on congressional GOP criticism of/frustration with Canada: “It is my job to stand up for the national interest. That’s what we’ve done from day one and that is what we are going to continue to do.”
Freeland says Canadians have a “national talent” for “finding compromises,” and are working “very, very hard,” but they need to defend the national interest, can’t just give in.
Premier Ford, outside the Canadian embassy, praises the federal government's NAFTA work, says they're united.
