In HS an older student asked to take a picture with me. As the camera flashed he pulled his cup out of his underwear and forcefully held it over my face. He was 17. I hope he evolved but I also don't think he'd be, like, the *ideal* candidate to shape the laws of this country.
We weren't friends. He had all the power and I had none.
He consciously humiliated me, after I happily agreed to pose for a picture with him thinking it was a gesture of kindness.
On the scale of Bad Things Humans Do To Humans, this isn't the worst. But it stuck with me for years.
After the picture was developed (yup, pre-digital cameras) I tracked it down and destroyed it, thinking that doing so would erase the shame. It didn't.
Talking about it today (even tweeting about it now) gives me hives.
This story pales in comparison to what Dr. Christine Blasey Ford & Deborah Ramirez went through.
My point is that I get overwhelmed when I see this guy pop up on facebook and today I have *more* social power than him... so I can't imagine how these two women feel when their accused attacker is up for a job that would effectively let him make decisions about their bodies.
So this is all to say:
1. I support Dr. Christine Blasey Ford & Deborah Ramirez
2. I believe humans can evolve, but...
3. If your past actions have so profoundly and SO negatively shaped a person's life I don't think you should be allowed to shape laws
