This will TEST the national capability of a Presidential Alert, a type of Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) only used for major emergencies that affect the entire country. Other types of local WEA messages include AMBER and Weather alerts.
WEA has existed since 2012 and has been used more than 40,000 times to warn the public about dangerous weather, missing children and other critical situations. October 3 at 11:18 AM PT is the first nationwide test of this capability.
A Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) is not a text message and it is not connected to your cell phone number. Instead, it is a special message that is received through your cell phone handset and passed to you directly from a participating wireless provider.
Not all cell phones are capable of receiving WEA messages. Check with your wireless services provider to learn if they are a participant in alerting, and what models of phones are included in that service package.
At 11:20 AM on October 3, an Emergency Alert System (EAS) message will broadcast following the Wireless Emergency Alert System test.
You cannot opt out of a Presidential Alert of the Wireless Emergency Alert System. Changing your phone settings will only disrupt your ability to receive local AMBER or Weather Alerts and Warnings (which could be dangerous in severe weather).
Instead of changing phone settings for the WEA test, if you don't wish to receive the test, silence or turn off your device briefly during that time. Changing the settings WILL prevent you from receiving local emergency alerts.
Read this for more information about the upcoming WEA and EAS tests on October 3 at 11:18 and 11:20 AM respectfully. fema.gov/media-library-…
This national alerting system is a different system than our local emergency alerting system, Sacramento-Alert.org and is reserved for more extreme emergency alerting needs.
For local alerts, please register for our regional system, Sacramento-Alert.org for notifications specifically in Sacramento, Yolo and Placer counties. This system is connected to the numbers you subscribe and you can control the subscription and information.
Locally, we are planning a regional test on 10/18 of the Sacramento-Alert.org system to ensure our staff is prepared and knowledgeable about sending these alerts, and to ensure that they are received by those subscribed. Help test our local system by registering today.
