This is my first time being published in Poetry Magazine, a journal I’ve long admired. Very grateful to @Don_Share & the other good folks there for giving this poem a home.
The Bureau of Investigative Journalism has done essential & comprehensive work documenting the impact of covert drone warfare in Yemen, Somalia, Pakistan & elsewhere. A great place to begin familiarizing yourself with what’s happening.

2019 marks the 400th year since enslaved Africans were brought here, before this was even a country. Black people have only had any semblance of full citizenship for about 50 yrs. I don't think the public always grasps the enormity of state-sanctioned oppression on that timeline.
If you kick someone for 350 years, and then stop kicking them (but really just kick them in a different way) for a *seventh* of the amount of time you spent kicking them, it would be completely disingenuous to look at the person and be like, "What's wrong with you? Just get up."
I just think it's worth reflecting on the incessant, intergenerational violence that black folks in this country have experienced, and the sheer amount of time they've experienced it for. All things considered, it's remarkable what our community has done in spite of this history.

I’m always struck by ppl who express admiration for those like Douglass & Tubman while labeling policies that attempt to build a more just & moral society “unrealistic.” Do these ppl think abolishing slavery was widespread & popular policy proposal in the 19th century? It wasn’t.
The US had quite literally never existed w/o the institution of slavery alongside it. The first enslaved Africans arrived in 1619 & the US became an independent nation in 1776.

Abolition required imagining a country that had never existed, a radical reconception of the republic.
So when I see ppl who express admiration for something like the abolition of slavery, but who turn around & say that something like The Green New Deal is unrealistic, it seems to demonstrate a lack of understanding of how meaningful social change has ever happened in the country.

as the year comes to a close something worth considering is that some of the "we've never been so divided" narrative exists bc many groups of historically marginalized ppl are voicing concerns they have long expressed, but it's only now that certain ppl are beginning to hear them
if your analysis of our country never included the voices of women, immigrants, black ppl, indigenous ppl, the lgbtq community, muslims, or any ppl living at the intersection of those identities, then maybe it comes as a surprise that a lot of ppl are, and have long been, fed up
if you close your eyes for long enough some people can convince themselves that oppression is no longer there, but closing your eyes doesn't make something disappear, it just means you were choosing not to see what was right in front of you

The U.N. Special Rapporteur has a new report out on extreme poverty and human rights in the United States that is absolute *FIRE* and you should read it undocs.org/A/HRC/38/33/AD…. Some highlights:
“But [the US’] immense wealth and expertise stand in shocking contrast with the conditions in which vast numbers of its citizens live. About 40 million live in poverty, 18.5 million in extreme poverty, and 5.3 million live in Third World conditions of absolute poverty”
On poverty and government decision-making: “There is no magic recipe for eliminating extreme poverty...At the end of the day, however, particularly in a rich country like the United States, the persistence of extreme poverty is a political choice made by those in power.”

Look, if you're still with the president or you still affiliate with his party, you're a bad person. You chose evil, you're bad. That's it.
Is that divisive? I guess.

Separating children from their parents and shunting them to military bases, even caring so little where they go you lose them by the hundreds is divisive, too.

If we are to unite around that? Then let the divide grow.
The idea of “convincing the other side” is a trap.

They think what Trump is and what Trump does is good. Trump happened because they wanted a Trump to happen. There’s no convincing. They’re convinced already.

There’s opposing.
