This weekend opinion piece by Theresa May in the traditionally left leaning is not only the clever move that many mention to persuade the politically homeless (or shall I say? Labour disenfranchised).
It is also a clear clue of what is happening next.
I thought for a while the reconciliation was impossible between Brexiters and Remoaners. But there is a way: We are having a General Election soon.
That’s my prediction.
I tweeted this photo some time ago thinking this was the way forward already, but I believe in it more so now.
I believe TM will bring a deal that will convince nobody, but it will be a deal none the less.
The deal needs to be harder than Chequers to convince her own party without forcing her out but soft enough to avoid a structural hard border in NI. She has dismissed both the possibility of a border in the Irish Sea and a border in NI. A paradox? Maybe not.
What if there was only half a border in either side?
What if NI could remain in the SM (so NI CAN enjoy FoM) but not in the CU? Checks could be done on goods away from the border but people would be free to travel. A Norway model for NI and a Canada + for GB.
But 2 problems:
1 -The DUP won’t accept a dilution of Brexit in NI, and I believe they won’t mind a hard border. The are also in coalition to give the Tory party a governing majority.
2 - The Tory Brexiters who won’t accept anything but a hard Brexit.
A GE solves both problems:
1 - It will remove DUP from the equation, arithmetically. What are the chances of having the same number of MPs, and for them to magically be again key to form government? Even if they were, there are other parties to form coalition.
2 - A GE where the Tory manifesto includes the acceptance of the proposed deal will force the hardest Brexiters to either change their mind and stand by the party manifesto or to leave.
As things stand, there isn’t enough time or room for UKIP or any new party to become potent enough to change to countries’ direction proposed by TM.
Not my preference, but if she manages this, many ppl will change their mind of her prime ministerial suitability.
