Adding मकार to every noun is another tendency which people don’t realize deviates from संस्कृत। Eg: “देश” is पुल्लिंग, yet the name of TDP has “तेलुगुदेशम्” (देश: not देशम् is 1st vibhakti singular). Deviating from संस्कृत is normal and natural. Only wrong is calling others wrong
Another example of this is the very name of Malayalam. If the etymology is मलय+आलय, then in eyes of संस्कृत grammarians, आलयम् should not be in the name given आलय is a masculine noun. It is आलय: not आलयम् in the 1st vibhakti singulr. मलयालय not मलयालम would be closer. But it’s OK
Similarly “कर्णाट” and “कर्नाटक” certainly seem masculine. From strict phonological eyes, adding a dIrgha आकारांत स्वर seems to contradict the gender. But again it’s OK - भाषा लोकानुयायिनी
