/ I’ve done the unthinkable...pre-organized my @Instapaper reading list according to my projects and interests. In the left sidebar, BASB and MESA are projects, and everything below that is a broad interest area
/ Only took about an hour to review my backlog of about 80 items. Half turned out to be no longer relevant, trivial, or broken link. Of the 40 that remained, all but 10 were easy to pre-categorize based on contextual clues
/ Amazing thing is, there’s only 13 folders, and all but one contains only 2-5 items. BASB is an exception with 15, but that’s because it’s my main focus and spans many topics. 2-15 items is a lot less intimidating than 80!
/ To add an already saved item to a folder, just swipe left and tap this button, which will show all current folders and let you create a new one
/ You can also do this triage right when you save the item, by tapping this button in the corner
/ I think what makes a reading backlog intimidating is uncertainty on multiple fronts: how long it will take to finish an article, whether it will be beneficial, whether it will be relevant to current projects, whether it will build real knowledge
/ Pre-triage helps with the last two, greatly increasing likelihood that your reading will be relevant to current challenges, and by grouping related reading in time, increasing the density of ideas and therefore their richness
/ I’m planning on writing an in depth article on curation tomorrow morning, and completely forgot I had 8 really good articles on the topic saved. Phew! Now I can start my thinking by building on what they’ve already done
/ How do you organize your reading list? Post a screenshot with a short explanation!
