"Lady Liberty"

The album starts with a call to action and a wink. "Lady Liberty" is a love letter to Bowie, brave enough to dress like a glamour queen on the sleeve to "Hunky Dory", and went further out with each subsequent release. 1/
In many ways, he is our international statue of (cross-dressed) liberty, beckoning us to be whomever we choose to be, and welcoming all to glittering cities of masks and unbounded possibilities.

The song also connotes the true greatness of the nation: 2/
a country created by dreaming immigrants as an invitation to more dreaming immigrants, who start laden with the dirt of the old world as they enter, and are scrubbed and tempered in the crucible of our vastness, to emerge clean in new identities.

2018 started with us adjusting to the loss of our dog President Willie, and me with a health issue that had me on my back and/or seeing specialists with big question marks looming over us. 2/
My Mom died this summer, my wife’s grandma, the last survivor I will personally know, followed as Hanukah started. She lived long enough to see Pittsburgh happen, a terrible bookend to what had been a beautifully triumphant life.

Is there a Republican in power who will actually stand up to the celebratory ugliness of Trump and the Red Hats, who will, as loud as me, say that power requires empathy, care, responsibility, and restraint? 1/
Is there one who will forcefully denounce the nauseating MAGA mania for giving wholly over to the thrill of doing wrong as antithetical to both American and Christian values? And then vote accordingly to curb the excesses? 2/
In the age of Trump, none do. None. They talk, then say they're retiring, and on the way out, quietly vote to cement cancerous power.

In initial few days of Cameroon part of our Cameroon-Chad-Niger-Nigeria study. If Chad was full of sand and driving through the Sahara & Nigeria was, well, Nigeria, Cameroon so far is all about the mud. In the drive from Maroua-Maga this morning, I was so sure we’d get stuck...
Loading bags of rice on boats to Ndjaména in Chad.
Most rice produced in Maga (in Cameroon’s Far North) used to go to Nigeria - but cross border trade has been severely affected by insecurity. All the farmers I met complained of impact of conflict on export of rice cultivated.
Had such a good conversation with the Sultan of Pouss. Told me how French colonisers forced the people of the region to cultivate rice-but forbade them from eating. If you wanted to cause problems for someone, you’d grow rice outside someone’s compound so they’d get into trouble.
