@alessabocchi Senator Warren's comments did not indicate that she is ashamed of being 'white'; they indicate that she's aware of her American heritage; it is no surprise that she's got native heritage, it is what you expect of people whose families were in Massachusetts in 1700;
@alessabocchi the colony government of Massachusetts tried to eradicate the natives beginning by 1645; they were largely successful; the only Indians who survived actually mixed with the white population; these events were very traumatic; Warren is only recognizing them;
@alessabocchi in New England region all of the organized Indian tribes are made up of people who are over 95% white; in the western US you have Indians who are pure Indian, but not in New England;
@alessabocchi in the American south you have the same phenomenon where the whites who lived there prior to 1800 are almost all mixed with black; they are actually very commonly 5% black; because in the 1600's, race mixing was common;
@alessabocchi in Georgia there were plantations with Irish slaves. These people were mixed with the blacks; also when black indentured servants became free they mixed with the whites who also had been indentured servants that became free;
@alessabocchi they began passing laws separating the whites & blacks by 1650; outright slavery was not actually legal until then; they passed a law saying if you were 1/8 black, then you were black; many people pretended they were white when they were not; & they mixed; prior to 1700;
