After six months of political crisis and high levels of violence in #Nicaragua, the @IACHR has registered 325 deaths, including those of 21 police officers. Repression and violence cannot be the response of a democratic state to the demands of its people.
#MESENI of the @IACHR registered the death of 24 children and adolescents. The Commission calls on the state to disclose information about the investigations pertaining to these deaths as well as in regards to the total number of deaths in #Nicaragua.
In #Nicaragua over 300 persons are currently detained due to incidents related to the protests: 8 of whom are beneficiaries of precautionary measures. @IACHR documented unfounded charges and observed non-compliance when it comes to the right to a fair trial of those prosecuted.
Since April 18, thousands of people have been forced to hide, displace, or flee from #Nicaragua to seek international protection in other countries as a result of selective persecution and criminalization practices against dissidents and their families. (4)
Journalists and photographers who cover the protests in #Nicaragua have also been victims of aggressions and harassment. The @IACHR recalls that any form of constraint directed towards silencing their work is incompatible with the right to freedom of thought and expression.
Over 300 health professionals have been fired in #Nicaragua for assisting individuals who had been injured during the protests against the government. The @IACHR warns that the absence of the personnel fired also impacts the right to health of the people.
In relation to universities, @IACHR has documented the criminalization, arbitrary detention and massive expulsion of students who participated in the protests in #Nicaragua. The State must cease this selective repression and guarantee all rights, including the right to education.
In the context of such serious deterioration to the right to protest, freedom of thought and expression, and other rights, it is of fundamental importance to resume the National Dialogue in the country in order to reach a pacific solution in #Nicaragua.
