After a lifetime of dysphoria I finally had my surgery in April. Initially I was elated but the climate of hate that I've experienced since then, has had a pronounced negative effect on my mental health.
Day after day we are bombarded with negative stories and opinion pieces on
Trans people, on all media platforms. I dread going into work, wondering just what piece of bigotry my co workers have been exposed to that day, and this sense of dread has permeated all of my social interactions.
As a consequence of this I have become more and more withdrawn
and my suicide ideation has increased exponentially.
I write this as an adult: I have a lifetime of coping mechanisms to draw on, I "pass" and I'm confident in my gender identity: I'm not going to act on this ideation.
I can't imagine what it must be like for a trans child or
young adult trying to navigate the complexities of their gender identity and their day to day interactions in the current climate. A media that continually invalidates your identity combined with various trans hostile groups, intent on excluding you physically and morally from
public life and spaces.
For journalists, such as Janice Turner and Andrew Gilligan, to not see that there are very real consequences for the mental health of all trans people as a result of the bile they write can only be described, at best, as disingenuous. At worst it shows
a callous disregard for the well being of a very vulnerable group, a disregard for which they should be ashamed of themselves
