In my opinion, traders need to clearly understand what market condition they want to trade and specialize in.

On a strategic level, it doesn't really matter since a simple adjustment in position size can help prevent dramatic fluctuations in one's equity curve.
But on a psychological level, market condition is a parameter worth considering.

I see this all the time: Traders initially make money in tranquil markets, but then, the tide begins shifting and they become emotive. Volatility gets to their head, and they start catching falling knives or holding on to losses.
This is not a way to approach trading.

A clearly defined structure within which you can operate is what you need. This is what gets you consistency. Not trading based on moods or emotions.
So, if the current market condition isn't your forte, stay away until the dust settles. Nothing wrong with that.

On some level, our goal as traders is to make as much money as possible when it's EASY to make money, so that we can stay on the sidelines (and maybe enjoy a cocktail by the pool) when it's HARD to make money.
