In terms of picking your battles, I still see effective enforcement of existing immigration law as the highest priority. Reduce the flow of illegals, enforce the laws that would prevent them from staying in the U.S. for years, and birthright citizenship becomes less of an issue.
Immigration law is enforced so unseriously, and blatantly defied in some areas, that writing more laws is like trying to plug leaks in a boat with toilet paper. Enforce citizenship laws as vigorously as you collect taxes and a lot of seemingly intractable problems will fade away.
But that's not how politicians work. Their power comes from writing laws and granting special exemptions. They don't solve problems. They "manage" problems.
It's like how every Great National Gun Debate begins with demands for new laws and ends with a list of the existing laws that were ignored or improperly enforced.
It's no coincidence that laws are disregarded when those who make the law send such clear signals that THEY don't take it seriously. Washington floats on a cloud, incessantly arguing about what SHOULD happen while ignoring what really IS happening far beneath them. /end
