Recently, a #tenured #prof at a grp dinner made a #sexist joke. I didn't laugh.

He pointed at me & called me out on it.

"See, I knew SHE wouldn't get it."

I reported it to an #administrator & copied a 1st yr prof also present at dinner. She corroborated my story.

Thread 1/7
Like me, she couldn't say anything during dinner as senior prof collaborated w/ our prog, which he reminded us several times. The administrator I spoke to was sympathetic & concerned, & assured us that senior prof is a well-known a**. We aren't the 1st to run afoul of him. 2/7
Hearing their responses validated my experience greatly.

The 3 of us discussed how junior prof & I would deal w/ future events. One way was to ask senior prof to clarify his "jokes."

Junior prof said this was likely to be the least destructive. Administrator agreed. 3/7
But then he added: "It seems to me the stakes of success/failure in addressing this particular challenge are just high enough to make it worth the trouble the two of you are already taking...provide useful experience of dealing with real-life difficult situations." 4/7
Administrator's response somehow didn't sit well with me. This is not how someone in #power should respond. The onus shouldn't be on #women to police appropriate behaviour, especially when we are junior #academics with everything to lose AND this is a KNOWN #misogynist. 5/7
Administrator, a tenured, #white, #heterosexual #cis #male, can do much more.

I want to bail on future events, but that leaves junior prof alone. I won't do that to her. She shouldn't be expected to model good beh for students at the table while risking her career. ALONE. 6/7
This is how #women take care of each other.

If you are in a position of #power like administrator, step up. You shouldn't need to be "asked."

It is a #privilege not all of us share. 7/7
