tl;dr: This dreamcast story — politico.com/magazine/story… — is bad, but this earlier reporting — politico.com/story/2018/10/… — is good. Too bad Politico put their reporters in this position by publishing today's piece.
“The report in Politico is completely false. There has been no subpoena issued and there is no litigation.” - Jay Sekulow, Trump’s personal lawyer
The main problem with the op-ed at Politico this morning is that it provides absolutely no evidence that even suggests this is Trump. Literally every point he makes could apply to dozens of people.
The op-ed also ignores everything we've learned since the Aug. 15 comments from Giuliani, including that Giuliani said conversations were ongoing in Sept (buzzfeednews.com/article/chrisg…) — and the reporting in Oct that they received questions from Mueller (cnn.com/2018/10/11/pol…).
OK, here's more from @emptywheel, and I'll leave it there for now —>
And the Katsas recusal is WAY overhyped. It in no way suggests that the president himself was subpoenaed. As the actual news report from Politico made clear, Katsas said he is likely to recuse on a number of these types of issues: politico.com/story/2018/10/…
While speculative, I also think it highly likely that this is true. Does anyone think Trump could or would have kept a subpoena fight with Mueller secret for the past two-and-a-half months?
