One key takeaway is that the Southern Strategy-fueled consolidation of racists into the GOP was incomplete until the Democrats put a black man in the White House.
Another takeaway is that white Democrats getting “woke by Trump” is an empirical fact. A klansman in the White House was as eye-opening to progressive whites as a black man in the White House was to racist whites.
That’s what I was getting at when I called Trump the GOP’s abusive “inside face”. The mask is off. White male supremacy runs on denial, and for a lot of us that denial has been at least a little pierced.

Michael Tesler is more nuanced though in this article, if I’m reading him correctly. The increase in anti-racist positions by white Democrats could partly just be a partisan backlash to Trump. When he’s gone, will that trend weaken?

The data on Obama-to-Trump voters lines up with other analysis I’ve seen that 2008 Obama was a special case due both to external factors like the Great Recession, and the fact that Obama went out of his way not to challenge white peoples’ racism.
Post-2012, Obama bit his tongue less. That really did make a difference in what we can call the completion of the Southern Strategy.
Hayes’ interview touches on how Hillary was much more upfront about white supremacy and white privilege... more than a black candidate probably could have gotten away with and a factor in her EC loss.
I’d love to see similar research/discussion on male supremacy, which gets under-discussed as part of the Southern Strategy and was clearly a big driver in internal left-wing differences.
While I’m talking about the Southern Strategy, here’s a great thread on it.

Check out that headline. “Drastic Party Realignment Could Harm Entire System”. Wow. Uh, yeah.
From the article: “There is good reason to believe that such a neat arrangement might drive the nation’s political temperature toward the boiling point and this endanger the whole system of party government.”
Here’s how I put it with over 50 years’ worth of hindsight.
