Obama, rallying for Gillum and Nelson, says, "The character of our country is on the ballot." He decries attempts to campaign on "racial and ethnic and religious division," saying it's a tactic "the powerful and the privileged turn to whenever control starts slipping away."
Obama after a protester interruption: "Why is it that the folks who won the last election are so mad at all the time? ...I mean, like, when I won the presidency, at least my side felt pretty good. ...It tells you something interesting...they're gettin' ginned up to be mad."
Obama says Republicans have to scare people with "bogeymen" because they know their actions in power, like tax cuts benefiting the rich and votes to "sabotage or take away" health care, are too unpopular to campaign on. "You don't hear a peep out of 'em on that," he says.
Obama is talking at length about Republican fearmongering, mocking the "EBOLA'S GONNA KILL ALL OF US" scare: "They do this every election cycle. Try to terrify folks, and then the election comes and the problem suddenly magically vanishes. You never hear about it again."
Obama denounces Trump's decision to send troops to the border over the caravan: "They're even taking our brave troops away from their families for a political stunt at the border. And the men and women of our military deserve better than that."
Obama links Trump's lying and fearmongering to his unpopular policies: "While you're distracted with all this stuff they're making up, they're also robbing you blind...'Look look look, look over there,' and then they're giving tax cuts to billionaires."
Obama's closing pitch is for people to vote for "a politics that's decent and honest and lawful, and tries to do right by people." He's making an argument that voting for Democrats is a vote for small-d democratic values.
Obama denounces Trump over birthright citizenship: "A president doesn't get to decide on his own who's an American citizen and who's not. That's not how the Constitution of the United States works. That's not how the Bill of Rights works. That's not how our democracy works."
Obama says that, given the health care stakes in the election, "You could save somebody's life" by voting for Democrats.
