Clicking on the American Academy of Pediatrics trending topic shows a steady stream of people mad because they think AAP said spanking was bad. Actually, what AAP mostly said was that it doesn't work.
"All forms of corporal punishment and yelling at or shaming children are minimally effective in the short-term and not effective in the long-term," says the American Academy of Pediatrics, and risk "negative behavioral, cognitive, psychosocial, and emotional outcomes."
I do wish the statement was written in a more reader-friendly way, though. It's rough sledding. pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/early/…

A weird tack for a guy whose whole pitch is his elder-statesman avuncularity to take. "I don't want to run, but all the kids in the race are crap, so here I am" is the opposite of the tone I'd have expected him to set.
Just a reminder that his instincts for primary-race messaging have never been any good, I guess.

One more thing on youth voting: There are a lot of folks in my mentions saying kids aren’t cognitively developed enough to vote. But it’s not clear to me what that means.
At 12, the typical kid is more than able to meet baseline standards for voting—understanding what an election is, learning about candidates, managing the act of voting.
When we bar kids from making choices they’re not mature enough to make, it’s generally because we’re worried that they’ll do harm to themselves or others if allowed to choose.

Just saw something on my feed that reminded me to remind you that if you’re a NYC (or vicinity) high school or middle school teacher and you’d like me to come talk to your students, all you have to do is say so and I’ll be there.
I've spoken with NYC middle school students about the history of youth activism, how they can make change themselves, whether we should lower the voting age—all sorts of stuff. And the conversations are always really lively.

One of my least favorite things is when anti-science bigots frame their anti-science garbage as being backed by science.

Trans people exist. This shouldn’t be controversial. It is not an “ideology.” We’re human beings. Just chill tf out, anti-trans tools.
It’s what the Trump administration is doing per the story NYT put out a few weeks back: claim that accepting that trans people exist/are legitimate/are who we say we are is “anti-science” to impose their anti-science garbage on the world.
So you’ve got like... the American Medical Association, American Psychological Association, American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Physician Assistants...

Big news! The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) published a policy statement in support of trans kids today and it is TRULY supportive! I was able to read it a few days ago & have been dying to talk about it because it’s THAT good. Here’s a thread with some of the best stuff:
First, a reminder of who we're talking about: the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is a body of roughly 67,000 physicians who work with children. It's a longstanding and credible body, using fact-based findings to shape its policies.
In contrast, the deceptively named American College of Pediatricians (ACP) has only a few hundred members (doctors and others) and has been designated a hate group. You may have seen their video on puberty blockers circulating around.
