Hi! Paul here-- you've happened upon one of the perhaps thorniest questions inherent in that poster and in our series: "Where Were the Middle Ages?" (thread)
First, a note about the poster-- as I hope is clear, the poster is meant to be a necessary simplification of some very complex and nuanced ideas in order to "shake up" or "break the ice" on some of the calcified ways that the public thinks about the medieval past.
It's not meant to be a be-all and end-all; it's a place to start, rather than a place to finish. A teaching tool, rather than a scholarly tome.

Midway through Ronald Kahn's wonderful book 'The Future of Investment Management'.

The 1st half is solely focused on the evolution of investment management through the last 4 millennia.

And rightly so. Because #history matters.

Investing as we know it today did not exist before the stock market crash of 1929 & the Great Depression that followed.

Slack regulations, inadequate company disclosures & the general inability to systematically analyse investments kept most investors out of the market.
This state of affairs, however, was soon changed by gurus like Graham, Dodd, Markowitz, Sharpe, Burr, Ross, & others who provided a systematic framework to analyse securities, define risk, & efficiently manage portfolios.

One of my very favourite phases in history is when the faith in miracles of the high middle ages met the commerce and industry of the late middle ages. Let me show you what I mean. This is the church of the Holy Blood in Bad Wilsnack, Germany... 1/
This church is only here because of something that happened in 1383. A knight with the nickname 'Big Head', Heinrich Von Buelow, decided he was going to burn the town of Wilsnack to the ground to piss off the local archbishop, who he was in a feud with... 2/
When the smoke clear, Wilsnack lay in ruins. However, in what was left of the church, three intact communion hosts, or wafers were found. Each appeared to have a spot of blood on them. The people of Wilsnack were gobsmacked - was this a miracle? 3/

Look we think of the Middle Ages in Europe as a dour procession of plagues and God stuff. And there were plenty of plagues and lots of God stuff! And also rugged manly bearded knights on white steeds with noble eyes or whatever. But that's boring.
We have ten billion words already about KNIGHTS and HONOR and BATTLE and HAM and whatever else plumps up Game of Thrones' wordcount. But you know the Middle Ages are like a fantasy bug zapper, drawing us in with its sweet glowy light only to char us in a zap of IT'S BEEN DONE

Centuries ago, like now, there were hostels, posadas or taverns where food was served in exchange for money, as in a thermopolium in Rome (snack-bar) where we, readers of @LRB @TwitterBooks @nytimes @NewYorker @washingtonpost, would often go
After the #fall of the #Roman #Empire in these businesses food was served in shared tables and consisted of a fixed menu, according to what was already prepared. Even the nobility, like celebrities today, would frequent when traveling.
But, when did the concept and business of restaurants truly begin?
It began with Paracelsus (1493-1541), a brilliant Swiss physician who modernized medicine with rational clinical judgment and changed the way we eat in the #Western #world.

I believe it's time for me to start my reflections on NT Wright's Gifford Lectures. I'll comment on each lecture after finishing it to simulate live-tweeting. Buckle up, folks. Here we go. #NTWGifford
The opening lecture is titled "The Fallen Shrine: Lisbon 1755 and the Triumph of Epicureanism" and looks at the modern age and how this relates to the study of natural theology & the historical Jesus. It is almost exactly what I expected.
NTW wants to show how modernity is this great atheistic orgy in which God is removed from politics, economics, science, and even Jesus. To make it sound a bit more respectable, he labels everything in modernity "Epicureanism."

2- The 'chief' of the new organization, the Council of the First Métis People of Canada (circa 2017), has put out a call to individuals and orgs to collect all of my communications re: 'Eastern Métis' in order to build a court case against me:
