As we apparently get closer to a Brexit deal, and the volume against the likely deal rises once again, it is interesting to look through the Lancaster House speech that the PM will supposedly have betrayed, with 12 objectives... 1/ gov.uk/government/spe…
Objective 1 has already failed - to provide certainty. Though it is interesting to note right up front the line "There will have to be compromises" which doesn't often get quoted by those thinking the speech should be the basis for the Brexit deal... 2/
Objective 2 has been partially dropped already - as ultimately for any kind of deep future relationship some parts would come under ECJ. There are many further complexities to this, but ok the direction is away from ECJ oversight 3/
Objective 3 is also a clear fail - there's still no real agreement on the role of the devolveds post Brexit, and it is hard at the moment to argue the last two years has made the union stronger 4/
Note the last part of Objective 4 - the only substantial reference to the Irish border. But "Nobody wants to return to the borders of the past... we will make it a priority to deliver a practical solution" is fairly clear. Anyway, WA on track on this one 5/
Objective 5, control of Immigration. Delayed. We still await an Immigration white paper. 6/
Objective 6, citizens rights, another failure. Certainty has not been provided. 7/
Objective 7, workers rights, last part dropped, the rest too early to tell. Presumably this isn't the bit of Lancaster House ERG want to return to 8/
Objective 8, the future economic relationship. Essentially asking for a deep partnership while not in the single market. Probably undeliverable though, as asking for single market rights in some areas (2nd pic) 9/
Objective 9, trade with others. Still the aim. However, we also see (second pic) that in fact Lancaster House was open to a customs arrangement with the EU. Just not a Customs Union. This ambiguity may have been written with Ireland in mind... 10/
Objective 10, science, no evidence this was really a priority, or anything has been delivered on it. 11/
Objective 11, fight against crime and terror. UK has tried to play this as a negotiating card, but no evidence of any progress, and there are ECJ problems if we get involved with some of this 12/
Objective 12, no cliff edge. Any Withdrawal Agreement would be compatible with this objective to a degree, though arguably a bit late, and the bit about the future partnership isn't going to happen 13/
Basically, and pretty obviously, anybody who says the PM needs to return to the Lancaster House speech is being highly selective. It says 'compromise' and no 'cliff edge'. But it also contains many elements which haven't been delivered. 14/ end
