In Northern France in the town of Belleau, there's a cemetery with 2,288 uniform, alabaster headstones honoring the U.S. service members killed in a battle there in World War One. On a wall there are inscribed 1,060 additional names of the missing-in-action. (thread)
One of those killed was U.S. Navy LTJG Dr. Weedon E. Osborne, a dental officer who was awarded the Medal of Honor after rescuing countless wounded in battle and was killed while carrying a fellow wounded officer out of harm's way.
I'm not surprised that today Trump cancelled a trip to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in Belleau, France to honor service members killed in WWI and blamed it on the rain. I'm not surprised because as a military veteran, I have watched him continuously disrespect the military.
Trump received five draft deferments during the Vietnam War, the last for "bone spurs", despite that never having previously appeared in his medical record and not a word about his ailments from it since. As if by magic, his "bone spurs" were healed in short time.
As reported by @KFILE, Trump later compared the threat of STDs in his sex life to the threat of the Vietnam War that he avoided. No, really. money.cnn.com/2016/10/14/med…
In 2016, Trump infamously called the late Sen. John McCain a "loser" for being captured during Vietnam, downplaying his service in uniform. McCain was a P.O.W. for five and a half years, where he was tortured and refused to give up his comrades. realclearpolitics.com/video/2015/07/…
Trump held a supposed fundraiser for military veterans in Iowa during the campaign, in which he raised $2.8 million. But for months, it was unclear how much went to veterans. He was heavily criticized, and it's still unclear. He's now being sued over it. thegazette.com/subject/news/g…
Late in the campaign, Trump attacked Khizr and Ghazala Khan, the parents of a fallen Muslim U.S. Army officer, after they criticized his Islamophobia at the DNC. He then suggested Mrs. Khan wasn't allowed to speak due to being a Muslim woman. nbcnews.com/politics/2016-…
Ghazala Khan responded with a moving op-ed in the Washington Post about her son's sacrifice and her family's pain and pointedly dismissed his sexism and Islamphobia. washingtonpost.com/opinions/ghaza…
Last year, after Army Sergeant La David Johnson was killed-in-action in Niger, In a phone call, Trump told his surviving mother that he "knew what he signed up for" and then proceeded to deny he ever said it when the statement was made public. cnn.com/2017/10/17/pol…
In the Summer of 2017, Trump, without consulting the DoD, attempted to unilaterally ban trans people in the military. The order has been blocked several times by federal courts and universally criticized for its inaccuracy and brazen discrimination. nytimes.com/2018/03/24/us/…
Earlier this year, Trump ordered a military parade in D.C., ostensibly to honor himself. The order was widely criticized by military personnel and the public and estimated to cost $80-92 million. Trump quietly cancelled it in August after the backlash. nytimes.com/2018/08/17/us/…
In August, it was reported by @ProPublica that Trump is allowing Veterans Affairs to be secretly run by @Marvel Chairman Ike Perlmutter and two other civilians, who are using it to benefit their private investments. No one is talking about this. propublica.org/article/ike-pe…
It's so bad at Veterans Affairs that numerous employees have either quit or been forced out, and the VA is awarding a much-criticized $10 billion no-bid contract for a needless and faulty computer service records system connected to... guess who? Read on. propublica.org/article/va-sha…
Trump has disrespected the military so often and so consistently at this point that I am certain there are things I've missed in this thread. He doesn't care about service members or veterans beyond our use to him as props for a political agenda. We are simply tools in his bag.
This is a coward who consistently avoided service, denigrates those who serve or have served, and has never missed an opportunity to exploit our service in order to silence Black Americans like Colin Kaepernick for respectfully protesting racism in our country.
So, I am not surprised that Trump is afraid of a little rain and that we who served in uniform rank below his weather needs. This is simply par for the course. Spend this weekend honoring those who have served and ignoring this childish clown. /thread
