Now that this information is out there, what I want to see from Facebook is a real commitment to engage on the substantive policy issues surrounding social media.
We could start with the #HonestAds Act that I introduced with @AmyKlobuchar and the late Sen. McCain.
Facebook has already adopted some of the political advertising reforms in that legislation, but we need to pass it into law so we can have a level playing field for digital political and issue ads.
I have also put forward a series of ideas to start a long-overdue national conversation about privacy, data, and social media.

Facebook, Google, and Twitter need to come to the table and engage so we can get some guardrails in place to protect Americans and the integrity of our elections.
The wild west days of social media are coming to an end, and these companies need to be part of the solution. If that happens, these differences can be put behind us. If it doesn’t, chances are Congress will act on its own.
