I wrote a book that is a love letter and homage to the culture and communities Black Americans built in the face of Jim Crow and racism at every level. For ppl who feel deeply about Blk history & life, I’m resharing info for holidays: uncpress.org/book/978146963…
I saw this photo in the Shuttlesworth Airport yesterday and it made me think of how deep my conviction was about writing that book and telling a neglected story about rituals/traditions/self regard and ways of being in Black America
Lift Every Voice and Sing was embedded in school curricula, pageants, civic associations, professional organizations, history lessons AND protest. It was part of a highly interdependent way of living and being.

Every time a black southerner went to the local store they were confronted with forced deference to white customers who would be served first.
And the store would be filled with racist caricatures of black people in an effort to sell to white people.

1. Never Let Me Go; Kazuo Ishiguro: A supremely crafted narrative begins unassumingly, but quickly reveals a different notion of childhood innocence and coming of age. The conversational tone fooled me into thinking I was walking into a world I understood. Nobel worthy.
2. We Should All Be Feminists; Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: As an author who breathes eloquence, Adichie doesn't disappoint. This short book/long essay is insightful and logical and human. If we want to raise boys without the toxic masculinity, this is on the required reading list.

The 14th amdt turns 150 years old this year on July 9. It is the closest we’ve come to writing into the constitution what we claimed in the Declaration of Independence. If you’re forced to pick one, choose the 14th - above the 1st, the 2nd, or the FIF. Sorry Dave Chappelle.

This is why "talking about race makes a person racist" is one of the weirder facets of White supremacist idiocy. Even if we don't talk about race, the entire world is certain to remind us that we're Black.
It's also why the White liberal hand-wringing about identity politics is absolutely silly. If we decided starting this MLK Day we'd never mention the word "Black" again, there'd be not one iota of difference in the way that we were treated.
