Just seeing this Root article criticizing my piece on calling out racists. I appreciate the attempt at balance, but it misses the critical point that this is about political messaging, not how individuals approach racism when they encounter it.

At times he does acknowledge that my argument is narrower than he paints it there, but still insists that, based on his personal experiences, there's no message that will convince racists to vote blue. He doesn't comment on all the racist Hillary voters or the Obama coalition.
The irony is all i'm ever advocating is the kind of inclusive messaging adopted by the likes of Abrams, Obama, and Gillum. They're just not called out for it because they are black.
This is understandable, & perhaps white politicians should be required to prove their bonafides more, but I still think it's useful to recognize that there are trade offs here that need to be weighed.
If you really think politicians should always "call out,"where's the criticism of Andrew Gillum for side stepping the issue with the "I'm not calling DeSantis racist" line? I'm still waiting for the critic who argues that erred in not calling him racist directly.
he erred*
