Looking at an old table (2011) on how practices would change in organisations. Nodding pleasantly to myself. We're slowly getting there - still getting messed up by one size fits all methods though.
X : Do you have a table for serverless?
Me : Not yet. The table was produced using some population genetic techniques. We're not quite at the stage (still exploring the practices) to do this for serverless. Soon. Give it a year or two for it to have evolved enough.
... there does however appear to be a budding process, DevOps community breaking into two factions. What those new practices will be, well the combination of finance + dev, measurement of capital flow seem to be big parts. Too early though, we don't even have a meme yet.
However, these population studies take an age ... a good 12 months of solid work ... to collect the data, run the analysis. I have some other fish to fry next year on culture, so I won't really dive in until 2020 by which time, the meme, the patterns should be settled enough.
Take something simple like the evolution curve. That was two years of thinking about a pattern I found useful, 6 months of hard slog and 9k+ data point plus endless blind alleys to produce one graph in 2007 to give one axis of a map a whiff of credibility. These things take time.
If I take mapping and just look at the simple basics of economic patterns, doctrine and gameplay ... then there are several lifetimes of work just sorting and exploring this.
To give you an idea, I'm spending an entire year (and I still don't know if that's enough) just exploring one single box in the doctrine table - "there is no one culture". It sounds trivial but in age of "you should be like "Spotify / Amazon / whoever" it's necessary.
