I've been working through many of the concepts introduced in the Spanner paper and it's been nice getting my hands on the real thing to help reinforce some of the leanings. ai.google/research/pubs/…
The TrueTime API is an amazing piece of work, but what stands out to me is the practicality of it's implementation, and that even I can understand it.
Spanner started life as a distributed key/value store but made the pivot to become a relational database and continues to evolve in that direction as more traditional relational workloads migrate to it. Spanner has come a long way since 2012. cloud.google.com/spanner

After building my first custom Lambda runtime, it's safe to say AWS hit a home run, the Lambda Runtime API is a game changer. aws.amazon.com/about-aws/what…
Given the combination of the Lambda Runtime API and Lambda Layers I no longer believe adding support for containers would add any additional benefit to Lambda.
The Lambda Runtime API provides a major benefit over containers for Serverless workloads: a well defined and opinionated runtime API for getting work done.

CockroachDB is to Spanner what Kubernetes is to Borg.
I would argue that Kubernetes is more "open" in terms of core functionality and community ownership. CockroachDB biggest challenge will be balancing commercial success with the needs of the broader community.
If feature gating becomes a problem then expect the community to respond over time with new challengers. Think Nginx vs Envoy.

The more time I spend writing Serverless functions the more I understand why the container image is overkill.
The only valid use for a Serverless container image is to workaround limited language support for a given platform.
I wanted a container image due to lack of transparency. This is something that FaaS providers can address by open sourcing their function wrappers and documenting their execution environments.
