I've been working through many of the concepts introduced in the Spanner paper and it's been nice getting my hands on the real thing to help reinforce some of the leanings. ai.google/research/pubs/…
The TrueTime API is an amazing piece of work, but what stands out to me is the practicality of it's implementation, and that even I can understand it.
Spanner started life as a distributed key/value store but made the pivot to become a relational database and continues to evolve in that direction as more traditional relational workloads migrate to it. Spanner has come a long way since 2012. cloud.google.com/spanner
