After building my first custom Lambda runtime, it's safe to say AWS hit a home run, the Lambda Runtime API is a game changer. aws.amazon.com/about-aws/what…
Given the combination of the Lambda Runtime API and Lambda Layers I no longer believe adding support for containers would add any additional benefit to Lambda.
The Lambda Runtime API provides a major benefit over containers for Serverless workloads: a well defined and opinionated runtime API for getting work done.

Kubernetes is a huge step up from IaaS and provides a ton of value. It's a bottoms up approach to platform building and offers more flexibility than fully opinionated PaaS offerings.
The delta between Kubernetes and a developer friendly PaaS is where the next layer of value is and where things tend to get opinionated -- a requirement for reliable end to end workflows.
While all this platform building is happening the question you have to ask yourself is: do I need to build, run, and manage my own platform?

To understand why people say Kubernetes is not for developers get your hands on just about any fully managed Serverless compute platform.
The first thing you'll notice is what you don't have to do. You don't have to setup clusters, VPCs, SSL certificates, or DNS before deploying an application and hitting it with a browser a few seconds later.
While Serverless compute platforms are often associated with event driven functions I'm glad the industry did not stop there. Containers are now supported by most Serverless platforms and that means more developers will benefit.

I've been working through many of the concepts introduced in the Spanner paper and it's been nice getting my hands on the real thing to help reinforce some of the leanings. ai.google/research/pubs/…
The TrueTime API is an amazing piece of work, but what stands out to me is the practicality of it's implementation, and that even I can understand it.
Spanner started life as a distributed key/value store but made the pivot to become a relational database and continues to evolve in that direction as more traditional relational workloads migrate to it. Spanner has come a long way since 2012. cloud.google.com/spanner

New and exciting for #aws #ECS: ECS now supports running clusters of GPU-based instances (p2 and p3 instance types)

🔢 Set # of GPUs in your task and ECS will schedule and pin physical GPUs to the correct containers 💃🏻

so first off, there are a ton of #aws events happening all around the world, all the time. i definitely try to make it to a lot of them! i am rich in frequent flyer miles 🌎✈️

here's a rundown of a few of the different types:
🗣️ an #AWSSummit is a 1-2 day event w/ multiple tracks of breakouts, a keynote + often workshops/labs/partner talks. summits are generally pretty big, + there should be something for almost everyone, at various skill levels and jobs. global list here: aws.amazon.com/summits
