Starting a thread for anything we find on google about Richmond City Board of Elections member Cherlyn Starlet Stevens. Feel free to contribute. 🧜🏻‍♀️
There are 7 RTD articles that she is referenced in. These are the 2 that are not related to her service on the board of elections. One article says she is a sales representative. 🧜🏻‍♀️
Her only campaign donations have been to Gilmore’s 1998 campaign for $200. This listed her then-employer as CM Pula Co. 🧜🏻‍♀️
I am really shocked there isn’t more out there about her. With this board being drawn on political lines, I am blown that we aren’t finding massive donation records or really anything in the public eye. 🧜🏻‍♀️
And it isn’t just her who isn’t in the public eye. Went through and found names of her parents, sibling, and ex husband. None of them are in the mix of things in the public sphere. Starlet seems to be pretty grassroots. 🧜🏻‍♀️
A little birdie dropped some links in our DMs. If you find stuff, feel free to reply or DM it on over if you aren’t comfortable posting it with your name. 🧜🏻‍♀️
This one requires a little backstory. In 2008 the NAACP filed suit b/c in anticipation of long lines/waits at minority precincts due to inadequate equipment. They were asking for poll hours to be extended and allow paper ballots in certain precincts.

Cheryln Starlet Stevens joined a Motion to Intervene as an Intervenor-Defendant asking the court to NOT extend polling hours or allow paper ballots in certain precincts as it would allegedly violate their constitutional rights. 🧜🏻‍♀️

Here is the 12 page document that explains in detail the case they were making. Remember, this is someone who 5 years later went on to become a member (and at one point Chair) of the Richmond City Board of Elections. 🧜🏻‍♀️

At tonight’s meeting, they were discussing possible budget request needs to prepare for the 2019 and 2020 election to ensure they have enough equipment. Now that I think about it, I wonder why Richmond is one of the only localities with a formula to determine machines needed. 🧜🏻‍♀️
This one also has backstory. Remember during the 2016 #RVAMayor election when Alan Schintzius was kept off the ballot due to invalidated signatures and he filed suit alleging that the method used to validate addresses disenfranchises low income voters?🧜🏻‍♀️

This was the same time when there was question on if #RPSBoard candidate Kevin Starlings would be allowed to run AND if #RVAMayor candidate Michelle Mosby’s signatures would be validated due to the court challenges around restoration of rights. 🧜🏻‍♀️

Cheryln Starlet Stevens was the chair of the Richmond City Board of Elections at that time. She requested advise from the Attorney General. This is the AG’s response to her questions. 🧜🏻‍♀️

Ultimately it was a court that decided Schintzius would not be on the ballot. Mosby and Starlings cases were decided by the board.

Oh to be a fly on the wall of those closed meetings. 🤔🧜🏻‍♀️

J. Kirk Showalter has been registrar since 1995. When she was reappointed in 2015, DPVA’s volunteer Voter Protection Council raised concerns about transparency and meeting notice of the reappointment. Cherlyn Starlet Stevens was Chairwoman. 🧜🏻‍♀️

This is a 2015 letter from the Department of Elections to the city Electoral Board and Registrar requesting they appear at a SBE meeting after issues of misprogrammed e-poll books, incorrect issuance of ballots, and poll worker training issues. 🧜🏻‍♀️

The letter mentions the direction of the Registrar and her inaccurate statements to press. The part of the letter that REALLY gets me is that the GOVERNOR at the time was illegally asked to show a second form of ID when he went to vote. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Starlet was chair at this time. 🧜🏻‍♀️
Per the Nelson County High School 1971 yearbook known as the Governor, Starlet Stevens was named “Grooviest” as part of the senior class superlatives. 🧜🏻‍♀️
Since I’m already here.... she was also a Majorette for several years. 🧜🏻‍♀️
