THREAD (The Global Status of CCS)

CCS is moving, but moving way too slowly for for 1.5°C or 2°C.

Even if you are not a CCS fan, worth checking the report by @GlobalCCS to get an update on the current status of CCS around the world.

There currently exists ~40MtCO₂ per year capture *capacity* (0.1% global emissions), the vast majority for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR). It is harder to know how much of CO₂ is stored (not commonly reported or verified), but the estimate here is 200MtCO₂ (cumulatively).
Of the 230MtCO₂ cumulative storage, the vast majority is in the US and for enhanced oil recovery. Norway is the only country (substantially) sequestering CO₂ specifically for storage purposes, where carbon pricing makes it beneficial to store the CO₂. Policy is important!
There are now 43 commercial large-scale global CCS facilities:
* 18 in operation
* 5 in construction
* 20 in various stages of development (though, 2025+)
A large shift in the regional distribution, US to EU & China.
Where does the CO₂ go? It goes down a few kilometers, generally in depleted oil fields, & a lot of experience doing this. Though, less experience on the monitoring & verification. As CCS scales, monitoring & verification will become ever more important!
Lost of policy & potential for CCS in China, but there is "a lack of policy operability; not enough commercial investment; and underdeveloped public participation.". Hence, not much delivery... CCS retrofits are probably key in China, given young coal fleet.
A long history of CCS in the US, new policies coming on board, but not much seems to be in the pipeline (see the fourth tweet in this thread). The report gives a positive spin, but not sure it is so positive on the ground?
Norway continues to move slowly, but surely, ahead on a project to create a CCS value chain, linking 2 small industrial sites, transportation, & storage infrastructure. But, ultimately, for this to work, it needs a large source of CO₂ to feed the infrastructure...

Global fossil CO₂ emissions are on track to rise more than 2% in 2018 (2.7%, range 1.8% to 3.7%). Emissions rose 1.6% in 2017 (leap-year adjusted) after a temporary slowdown from 2014 to 2016.

* EU, down 0.7% [-2.6–1.3%]

There is a broad spread in CO₂ emissions per capita, but for a chance of 1.5°C or 2°C, countries with low per capita emissions also have to reduce emissions.

Yes, developed countries have to do more, but they can’t do it alone!

Does model bias effect outcomes of the #IPCC 1.5°C emission scenarios #SR15?

The scenario database is over represented by some model frameworks. Taking statistics will over represent some models (eg, REMIND, AIM), discount others (eg @IEA), & not all models included!

The bias varies by scenario category, here for 1.5°C scenarios with "no or low overshoot" as highlighted in #SR15. Should REMIND & POLES get more weight then GCAM or MERGE?

I often take medians of scenarios to simplify communication, trying to reveal the "key characteristics" of 1.5°C (trying to find robust messages). The scenario community does not like this approach

The #IPCC Special Report on 1.5°C #SR15 highlighted 4 illustrative scenarios. They vary widely in
* Socioeconomic assumptions (SSP1, SSP2, SSP5)
* Total (primary) energy use
* Biomass
* Solar
* Nuclear
* Oil

This is how the illustrative scenarios are presented in the #SR15 SPM. The energy system is shown by the table, the figures seem to give the key characteristics. It seems the selection was based on the use of biomass. 2/
P1 (LED) & P2 (S1) have the lowest use of biomass across scenarios, P4 (S5) has the highest use of biomass. They are outliers, which was perhaps the point of the selection? Because they are outliers, they potentially give a skewed perception of how most models get to 1.5°C! 3/

The purpose of this thread though is more focused on the £675 000 as it's easier to show how this money was used.
It's important to understand this was all spent at the end of the campaign when they had the biggest gains in the polls.

This involved facebook ads and also they campaigned on facebook even when both campaigns were supposed to be taking a break because of the death of Jo Cox.

La question qui revenait le plus souvent concernait la surface au sol de tous ces panneaux photovoltaïques (3 x 60 GW en été, 5 x 370 GW en hiver).
On va prendre pour exemple la centrale solaire de Cestas en Gironde.
Inaugurée fin 2015, c’est la plus grande d’Europe avec 300 MW de puissance installée (presque 1 million de panneaux !).

Nantes, vous connaissez. Chateaubriant, c’est une ville de 12 000 habitants à 63 km au nord.
L’ancienne ligne de chemin de fer était fermée depuis 1980, trop peu rentable.
Mais des élus locaux ont voulu la rouvrir, au nom du désenclavement, du développement durable, et que sais-je encore, dans les années 90 et 2000.

Pour des raisons « économiques », c’est un « tram train » qui fut choisi. C’est à dire...
Un train utilisant les voies de tram dans Nantes, et l’ancienne ligne, mais électrifiée, à partir de la sortie de Nantes. Pourquoi ce choix ? Visiblement, un TER était trop gros pour utiliser les voies dans Nantes, et l’élargissement (ou la création d’un tunnel !)...

A) We don't delegate and end up doing things we shouldn't be doing because "my direct report doesn't know enough". We don't realize that we're making them not know enough and adding us more work that we could...
3\ ... use for doing other things that we should be doing.

B) We're making it harder for our direct reports to talk to other people directly to get shit done, and in turn, make them always come to us to know who to go to.
