I just finished a story about ghost stations in San Francisco.

I was inspired after my little Forest Hill station thread, and then I found some really great photos and cool stories about the early wild years of SF transit plans, streetcars, and tunnels.

(If you ever wondered about the weird way J Church goes in between the houses, or about the abandoned tunnels on the side of Market Street, or about the footbridge in Dolores Park… this post might shed some light!)
(The invisible “reading UX” part that took a bunch of time, but I am really proud of: redoing all the maps so that they’re the same orientation [and scale if need be], making it easier for readers to arrive at the good sense of the spaces I’m talking about.)

A few tiny things I learned about London Underground today that delighted me, a small thread:
1. There’s a station called Farrington that was recently massively upgraded, but it’s been done in a way that the new entrance is opposite the preserved old entrance, so the past and the future are literally staring each other in the face:
2. Interestingly (but unsurprisingly) given the “London Underground” name there is a separate map denoting which parts of it are in tunnels, designed to help users with claustrophobia or other anxiety conditions.

Mind blown, but also:

If a design detail is so invisible no one knows about it, is it a failure?
We’ve seen this not so long ago with the “hold space to move cursor” trick in iOS, too.

“Where have you been all my life” years down the road doesn’t feel like a good UI strategy.
This feels different to me than “hey, there’s an arrow in the FedEx logo” (smile in the Amazon logo, bear in the Toblerone logo, whatever). Too many things end up feeling like Easter eggs, even though there is a long gradient between an Easter egg and something truly crucial.

What I really admired about the Videogame Museum in Berlin is that they didn’t stop at cheap nostalgia, or simply trying to recreate an arcade parlor or a mancave. They went much further than that. They managed to put together the biggest celebration of videogames I’ve ever seen.
Sure, there were displays of old hardware like this, and artifacts strewn around to remind you that You Were Young Once.
But soon, I realized that there was much more. First hint: The old Pong machine had its innards exposed, because – well – weren’t you always curious?

And you could still play it in that state! (Which actually felt a bit weird.)

1. With @realDonaldTrump once again going after the Ninth Circuit (Happy Thanksgiving, I guess??), here's a medium-sized #thread on each of the five independent factual inaccuracies, analytical problems, and/or outright lies at the heart of his judicial temper tantrum:
1. Let's start with the easiest and most obvious flaw: The actual decision that has set off this tirade was by a federal district judge in San Francisco, _not_ the Ninth Circuit. Especially if he's relying on reversal rates (more on that shortly), that's a pretty key distinction.
2. As for the decision itself, the Executive Order the district court put on hold purports to redefine eligibility for asylum in a manner that is squarely inconsistent with the text of the relevant statute, 8 U.S.C. § 1158.

Odds are that _any_ judge would've ruled the same way.

On va commencer par enfoncer une porte ouverte : la production des panneaux photovoltaïques, c’est 0 la nuit jusqu’à ce que le soleil se lève, maximum vers le midi solaire (13h ou 14h donc), puis boum ça retombe à 0 le soir.
