My FPL Season In Freefall: A Teachable Thread 🤓

Ok, I may be (slightly) exaggerating, but see if you can pick out which part of my season I was playing smart, and when I was chugging the stupid syrup…

So, what happened dummy? 🤷‍♂️

I forgot the golden rule of FPL: KISS - Keep It Simple Salah

I made a relatively simple game far more complicated than it needed to be.

And I paid for it.

I’m going to look a little closer at what happened so maybe you can avoid the same mistakes.

GW 1: Holy Shit 🤯

Yeah, it was a crazy good start. All that pre-season reading and planning paid off 🤓

GWs 2-4: Chasing Pt 1 🏃‍♂️

Between GWs 3 & 4, I brought in players who had just banged.

Here are their combined points before and after I had them:

Kante: (10) / 4 🔻
Arnie: (10) / 7 🔻
Mkhi: (16) / 1 🔻

Four straight red arrows followed. Time to try something different.

GWs 6-11: Loyalty & Reward 🤜🤛

After a GW5 WC, I identified a strategy that could help me regain momentum:

✅ A viable front seven with good fixtures and a high points ceiling
✅ A 3-4-3 formation that would allow me to maximize these players
✅ No hits, try to roll transfers

✅ Barring injury, play the same front seven every week

And most importantly …

✅ If a player blanks, be patient. I’d give everyone 3-4 weeks to show their mettle.

It worked 🙌

Over the course of these six gameweeks, I took no hits and only made six transfers, all of them on defense.

Hazard missed a week to injury, but aside from this, I played the same Front Seven every week.

They ended up delivering 286 out of a total 417 points over this period, a whopping 69% of my points! 😍

They also helped bring me six straight green arrows and a rise from 58k to 2500! 🧗‍♂️📈

The IB ruined me. It gave me way too much time to think and I fell into the classic FPL trap: chasing points.

I wanted, I needed, I HAD to have the players who just hauled and would surely haul again. 🙏

Over the next five gameweeks, I made 11 transfers and took 4 hits 🤦‍♂️ 

I also shipped out most of my Seven Samurai 😢

They punished me 👿

The players I brought in have been a mixed bag.

Chasing brought me five straight red arrows and a fall from 2500 to 36k 🔻

Not exactly a disaster. But perhaps indicative of something 🤔

A few simple rules I will try to employ moving forward:

✅ Be patient. When you bring in a player, give them 3-4wks. A blank doesn’t merit a dump.

✅ Don’t chase! Hauls are often followed by blanks. Make sure a player is consistent before buying

✅ Minimize hits. It's a vicious cycle. Use 'em when you need 'em but don't fall into a black hole of transfers!

✅ Draft a plan and stick to it. 3-4wk windows are good blocks. Beyond that too many things can chance.

✅ Don’t overthink the game! KISS

✅ Always Captain Aguero. Salah also works 😉

✅ Have fun! What's the point if you can't enjoy this game?!
