Someone on github referring to a minor bug reported 18 days ago that I explained was not trivial to fix, writes "People say that redbull gives wings ;) Is there a way to speed up this endless process?" and I already want to give up open-source software, 1 hour into my work week.
To be honest at this point I find as a society we are failing to deserve open-source. Maintenance is a tedious job. Countless companies using software with zero intent to help paying decently for its quality and maintenance (and thus their _own_ safety) even when directly asked.
Feature-wise, people don't realize that submitting a PR is often doing 20% of the job, I have to evaluate it with the lens of everyone's interest, rework it and then maintain it forever. In a fair system studios should pay to post their PR! Logic has been turned upside down.
I'm refusing good full-time job offers because I always wanted dear imgui to be on the side of "everyone's interest". But through the bureaucracy and inaction of most parts, the market is basically answering "we want privately licensed, commercial, closed-source software" instead
My simplistic perception is that open-source funding seems frequently associated to sabotaging the wider interest: open-core model, or create a need for support vs the ideal of software engineering being to make software that need a little support as possible.
It's just a tricky equation to solve in the current system. The problem has been up in the air a lot lately in tech conversations, maybe some will begin find a solution for it this year.
To clarify: I'm not asking nor want more hobbyists helping on Patreon. I am extremely thankful for the help on Patreon. To be honest I would prefer to completely close it and aim at being funded by businesses, not by individuals. I'll look into the steps to make this happen.
Also need to clarify that my situation is generally good & I am lucky I can live off the thing I wanted to make. It's entirely my choice that I bet on "Can the community of studios fund this for everyone" instead of "Alright I'll take this job in a dear imgui-friendly studio",
As thus, my lament is more of the nature that it is a shame that the system can't sustain this sort of effort naturally because it would be in everyone's interest _including_ the businesses. On a personal level I only have my utopic ideals to blame :)
I appreciate the answers, but many seem to reply with business suggestions or ways to optimize at my level and for my own benefit within the current system, whereas I am saying the current system is broken and biased toward making software that is not truly open-source.
