BREAKING: In court filing last night HHS official said any effort by Trump administration to locate and reunite potentially thousands of additional separated migrant kids identified by @OIGatHHS would be resource-and-time-consuming, if not impossible.

The @ACLU isn’t buying the explanation.
In a Friday night court filing, when you likely weren't paying attention, the Trump administration said finding and reuniting all of the thousands migrant children it separated from their parents might be impossible.

I asked DHS if they want HHS to identify the *thousands* of additional children @OIGatHHS says we separated between 2017 and the start of zero tolerance, so they can refer them for reunification.

Radio silence.

We know that @RepCummings intends to keep family separations front and center on House Oversight.

As I told @JoeNBC, that might be one of the only ways we find out who knew what and when, and if these thousands of children will ultimately be reunited.

Full stop, that is not true.

Take it from me -- I've seen them.

They're cages.

And during zero tolerance, kids separated from their parents were put in them by Trump in a systematic way never done before.
Nielsen just said cages inside Border Patrol processing facilities are different from animal kennels.

They are not.

And I said that immediately after seeing separated kids in them when I joined @kasie on the air this summer.

Late in El Paso but wanted to share few things I brought up on @chrislhayes' special.

Trump's idea of an emergency is a completely foreign idea here.

To understand why we're here, understand one word: deterrence.

It's been bipartisan US border policy for decades, starting with Clinton.

Doesn't work.

Yes, crossings dropped, but deaths increased as migrants took more dangerous journeys here.

Trump wants more of it. #inners
Our only border "crisis" is a *humanitarian* one of large groups of asylum seekers crossing in deadly, remote areas.

Why?

If Trump actually wanted to know, he'd put resources towards processing them legally, not into metering, nor DoD and CBP shows-of-force. #inners

Let’s try to make some sense of the issues re: #WhereAreTheChildren

This issue—generally speaking— isn’t new.

AND it’s being aggravated by the negligence and aggressiveness of this administration. 1/xx
Let’s go back in time, say to the late 1980’s. The Department of Homeland Security does not exist yet.

The agency responsible for kids coming across the border is INS, which was in DOJ.

There were MASSIVE problems with how INS did things.
Mainly, kids were subject to indefinite detention if there wasn’t a parent or family member to claim them.
