To understand the phenomenon of ‘woke capital’, you just have to understand that the ‘capitalist’ ruling class cares far more about the liberal institutions through which it wields power than about making money.
It’s through the basic liberal institutions - multiparty elections, civil society, and the ‘free’ press - that the ruling class launders wealth into power (without power, you won’t hang on to wealth very long).
It’s these liberal institutions that the elite wants to spread to every corner of the globe. A political system that requires private wealth to function (multiparty elections), civil society institutions that require private wealth to exist, a media that runs on private wealth.
Everywhere you see ‘free’ and ‘private’, what that means is that those things require private wealth to run. It means that those things require the patronage of moneyed elites.
It’s these liberal institutions that are the expression of ‘capitalist’ power and most people are more interested in power than merely collecting the trappings of wealth. Unsurprisingly, supporting the latest liberal fashions is more important than maximizing profits.
Now, of course, you need money to make all this run, but it’s important to remember what money is: it’s not a natural phenomenon, it’s an instrument of state control. What you have here is a system for maintaining and controlling an elite.
