Interesting fact of the day: both John Quincy Adams (Christian Unitarian) and Franklin Pierce (Anglican) when were sworn in as presidents did so using a book of law to represent the Constitution:

Also, Ted Roosevelt didn't use a Bible when sworn in as president in 1901:

The Bible tradition is only a tradition for some, never a rule. Nothing new with people not using it when swearing for the 116th Congress today.
Interesting case: the former ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein was sworn in using a Kindle, with the Constitution open on it:

And this is one amazing fact of America: despite the majority of people being from a giving faith, the country protects religious freedom like no-other on Earth! Yes, there are people saying stupid things and creating false litmus tests, but they are just wrong.
The American experiment is about an ordered framework for liberty where people are free to conduct their lives as they see please as long as they do not invade someone else's (negative) rights. That is amazing. And that should be celebrated every day.

Ezra's arguments can be summarized in:
"Paul Ryan is evil because he cut taxes from those who pay taxes, wanted to give money to the military (industrial complex), and proposed a cut to an entitlement program that I like".

Then he claims Ryan lied, lied, lied. It is amazing how Ezra pretends history started in 2015.

@SpeakerRyan's tenure was bad. He should've been fiscally responsible and pushed for his agenda instead of following the majority of majority idea.

But Ezra's piece is bonkers.
From the moment Ryan assumed the speakership, it was clear that he'd given up on his policy proposals -- they wouldn't pass the test of the majority of the majority. But if the Speaker had pushed them anyways, Ezra's piece would be on how crazy, evil and out of touch Ryan was.

I still disagree a lot with Cass' and Salam’s views on immigration a lot. They assume that we can centrally plan the society according to the values of the current establishment, denying the fact that it is impossible to fully predict future.
We can have a Burkean or a Madisonian argument on why to keep a structure that is stable and everyone knows it well. Enforced and enforceable laws. But dictating which type of immigration (or no immigration at all) is social engineering 101.

The rest of the modern world does not have the type of healthcare financing system AOC is proposing. Brazil has, it is crappy as hell with people waiting up to 30 years for an appointment.
Developed economies usually have a overly regulated system with at least one the following:
- Pay at the point of service (FRA)
- Copayments of services (UK, SWE, ESP)
- Gov subsidizes insurance (GER, SUI, NET)
- Not all-in coverage (CAN, UK, ESP)
We can and definitely should do something to improve the way Americans pay for healthcare -- and this goes a lot through deregulation, by the way. But Medicare for all is not a solution to the problem.

2. But I was just reminded of this series of tweets from Trump's Inaugural which offered up little tidbits of information on past presidents. They reveal an interesting, MAGA-inflected take, on American history. For example, Madison was a shrimp, while Lincoln was bigly.
3. Note also that the Civil War "saved the union." The absence of the word slavery in relation to Lincoln seems, um, like an odd oversight, if not intentional. Also, Madison was known for his deep erudition and his patient intelligence, not his "mightiness."
