Some level of homophobia, even within the gay community, was nearly universal 30 years ago. I cringe to think of the easy laughs popular sitcoms got for simply featuring an effete male & a knowing wink.
My friends & family almost universally used "fag" or "faggot".

Sexuality in the United States is never an easy discussion, and it might never be, but to the extent we are talking about it now, I am all for welcoming all allies to the table, no matter how recent their conversion.

It's promoted by organized religion, has only relatively recently been sanctioned by secular communities, and almost just as recently was identified aspsychiatric pathology.
Add to that its relation to that other social sickness, misogyny, and complications grow.

.@KevinHart4real is a straight black male comedian, and I'm pretty sure that some difficult cultural forces need to be recognized when evaluating material or behavior older than 8 to 10 years, within reason.

I think the fact that Hart is willing to continue to address the issue in a public forum, in clear view of the greater black community, only serves to push the narrative forward.

As a gay man I get the discomfort & the sense of betrayal one can feel when something like this is brought out from someone's past. But get a damn grip.
Many seasoned "enlightened" allies now want to pretend that their acceptance has always been a matter of fact & record.

That is utter nonsense. Even in our relatively new social ordering, where marriage equality is a legal reality, the number of Americans who actually think it should be legal is barely the majority.

Young urban queer activists, while inspiring even as a fact of being, seem unwilling to cop to their own limited experience base and knowledge of history and are often the first with pitchfork and torches in hand, ready to burn any at the stake for even slight offenses.

This moment is not unlike the faux controversies that many used to try to bring down the spectacular @JoyAnnReid. I came to her defense then. Rightly.

He was simply parroting views that probably most people around him held. It was once an easy laugh, and he is a comedian.
