The extra 'r' input doesn't seem to impact the output. Without r also images look very similar. Why is it there? What's the intuition of it being there?
BTW - I modified approach a little bit so instead of scanning x and y from 0 to max, it starts in the middle and the network outputs where in neighbourhood to move. Sort of like Langton's Ant. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langton%2…

1/ Was reading and thinking about why deep neural networks work so well on "natural" learning tasks (such as image classification).

Here are my notes.

(If some parts are vague or if they assume a familiarity with a concept you're not aware of, please let me know)
2/ First major insight was that the minibatch of data for gradient descent actually helps in generalization on unseen data.

Gradients of minibatch of data that are specific about that batch cancel over multiple runs and what remains is gradients that are generally applicable.
3/ It is known that neural networks are universal function approximators. That is, given a function they can approximate that function with arbitrary accuracy.

But now I think that's not an interesting result. What's interesting is that they give good answers on unseen data.

I’m wondering if there’s any proof of a startup that grew to Google or Apple’s scale by applying theories of aggregation.

Business theories are more descriptive than prescriptive, and that limits their use.
A startup is much more likely to get killed by a random cause than be successful by applying theories.

I’m guilty of theorising as well, but I try to caveat by being explicit about (the massive) role of chance in business success.
Moreover, I think taking the top 5 tech companies and dissecting their reasons for success is good for satisfying curiosity but isn’t helpful for startups.

Your startup will never be Google. There will never be another Google.

Here is our prediction for how Apple will support reading NFC tags in iOS 12. This theory was developed after much research of publicly available information. Please follow along and ask any questions.

If you haven't been following, Apple added an NFC controller to the iPhone 7 to enable Apple Pay (contactless payments). It wasn't until iOS 11 that support for reading NFC tags was added. That was a huge deal for the NFC industry.

However there are some significant limitations in iOS 11 for NFC tags. The most significant of which is that (1) a 3rd party app is required and (2) the user experience requires an explicit user interaction to read NFC tags. More in link here...

2/ pierwsza - prezydent powinien wydać postanowienie (art. 142 ust. 2 Konstytucji) stwierdzając przejście w stan spoczynku 10 sędziów. Tymczasem prezydent wysłał listy, w których pisze, że przeszli w stan spoczynku. List nie ma żadnego znaczenia, nie kreuje stanu prawnego.
3/ co ciekawe, listy wysłał również do tych sędziów, którzy powołali się na Konstytucję, wyrażając wolę dalszego urzędowania i nie dołączając zaświadczeń lekarskich. Co ciekawe, takiego listu nie wysłał do PSN Iwulskiego. Ten również stwierdził, że nie dołączy zaśw. lekarskiego.

This is from the Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii (Прокудин-Горский) collection. Prokudin-Gorskii was a Russian chemist (he studied under Mendeleev!) who was particularly interested in dyes & photography. (1/n)
In fact he was among the first to study photochemistry in the context of photography, having taken a trip to Germany in 1902 to study under Adolf Miethe in the topic of coloured photosensitization & photography. His goal, ultimately, being that of colour photography.

I've been trying to figure out what the "Intelligence-Gathering Vessel" was that the @RoyalNavy (infuriatingly) wouldn't name or post pictures of that crossed the English Channel on Christmas Eve. Because of the timing, I strongly suspected it was the Viktor Leonov AGI. #SpyShip
I can now say, with a high degree of confidence, a Russian Navy AGI stopped in Trinidad & Tabago 2018-01-11 to restock, and they have likely left by now. I suspect, but cannot yet confirm, that AGI is the Viktor Leonov|Виктор Леонов, the Vishnya-class intelligence ship. #SpyShip
You may remember the collective freak-out when there was a Russian Navy intelligence gathering vessel off the US East Coast last Feb-Mar. That info was Secret(or higher)-classified Navy intelligence, leaked by the Pentagon, but there was no investigation or pursuit of the leaker.
