@pmdfoster I think you are quite unfair in your evaluation. First of all, would she still be in charge of she would have been honest and not endulged this 'nonsense'. /1
@pmdfoster Lots of commenters seems to ignore that this nonsense is sincerely believed by large parts of ERG and right wing Tories, Conservative grassroots & voters as well as Leavers & yellow press. Little hint: it would have been dismissed and she'd have faced rebellion much earlier. /2
@pmdfoster There was no way that she'd have gotten that far without endulging this nonsense, it's as easy and as depressing as that. The key stakeholders simply don't believe in power imbalance between EU & UK, potential negative consequences of Leaving or magnitude of divisions in UK. /3
@pmdfoster So we are, where we are, because is was in the way she has been and we would have gotten suck way earlier without this approach. /4
@pmdfoster 2nd, she could have tried in degrees to lower expectations & sneak in some doubts in those believes BUT would that have been possible? W/ this kind of media environment (incl Telegraph)? After yrs of acquiring those believes? And w/ this PM (who shares some of the believes)? /5
@pmdfoster In short: I don't think so. She would have needed much more time. Time she didn't have given that she was forced to trigger A50 notification that earlier (as I remember she already triggered it later than most backbenchers & grassroots wanted). /6
@pmdfoster 3rd, I really don't like May & I'm one of those persons who are far away who wish her all the best (she promoted legislation enabling Skype families, IMO this qualifies a warm place in hell for her and Conservatives who supported that). But respect where respect is due. /7
@pmdfoster She clinged on and enabled that there actually could be a draft acceptable to EU w/ a more or less good chance to pass HoC before 29 March. She probably spares UK a very humiliating & expensive deal after no deal Brexit. UK has lots of problems but leadership's none of them. 8/8
@pmdfoster PS: Apparently @anandMenon1 agrees with you but frankly, I think both of you ignore communicative, perceptual and cultural background of the decision she made.
