1. I often tell young people to do the best they can on their own rather than rely on other people. Few things are more annoying in life than having someone who constantly reminds you of what they did for you. Success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan.
2. We might call it the “Dai pasina ini” phenomenon. These reminders are an assertion of power and sometimes a demand for payback. “You wouldn’t be where you are without me,” they say, reminding you of your smallness & their greatness. You must be grateful & know your place.
3. This is why it is often said there is no free lunch in this world. Whatever is done for you, there is ultimately a price for it. It could be perennial show of gratitude, unwavering loyalty or surrender of rights to challenge. There is always a price.
4. Hence it is better at all times to try to do whatever you can on your own. But should you ever assist someone, & you genuinely mean it, lead the way to break with this tradition. It should be evident to all and sundry. It should speak for itself.
5. Finally, some wise words I picked in a television political drama, Madam Secretary: “Achievement is often anonymous. Some of the greatest things have been done by people you have never heard of, quietly dedicating their lives to improving your own”
Happy Sunday to you all!
