Please join me in hoping like hell that the visible rise of Fascism, Racism and Neo-Nazism in Australia right now is a simply a vocal minority supported by 15 year old internet trolls.The alternative is far worse.
I fear that the apparent rise in far right lunacy is genuine, that people failed by the educational system and betrayed by the economic system are turning to fascism. I hope the majority are better than that but fear I might be wrong.
The problem is that there are people our there who get all their "facts" from Facebook groups and Youtube. There's a strong anti-intellectual streak on the Internet right now with people who are genuine experts being called "elitists" and being ignored.
So, the options are, 1) These are dangerous times, the rise of the Far Right will destroy what good is in our society or 2) The FRNJs are all just dipshits and children and once they grow up they will realise it's all bullshit.
However, the rise of flatearthers and anti-vaxxers on the internet who refuse to actually listen to FACTS suggests that the average person in the west is losing the ability to think rationally or perform analysis. They are also refusing to listen to those who can think rationally
These people have even called me "elite" because I am a writer and have work in mainstream sources despite the fact that I am working a working class, poor, Indigenous woman. This suggests their anti-intellectualism is deep-seated and irrational.
I hope they are simply stuck in an echo-chamber which will one day collapse leaving them blinking in the light and realising they are being dicks. I fear that I am the one blinded by my echo-chamber into no realising that the FRNJs are indeed dominant and we are all doomed.
I am at the point where i don't know what the fight is, are we to continue to fight to shake the anti-intellectual, far-right trolls out of their echo chamber or are we to prepare for the shit-hole distopia they will create when they get power? I must admit I am a little scared.
One more thing: I truly believe that fighting for social justice is what good people do, I cannot imagine why someone would be against it. These days however "SJW", Social Justice Warrior is a pejorative. In addition people now believe Nazis were socialists. That is terrifying.
